bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 8, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a black body with a small beige head. Aroma of leather, toasted malt, dark fruit jam, and nuts. Flavor of lightly charred toast, sweet raisins, caramel, and plum. ElJefe (553), Rochester, New York, USA Apr 7, 2007 Very dark brown with a medium sized brown head. Aroma of port, dark fruits, cocoa, and perhaps a touch of molasses. Flavor is very vinous, the port character present in the nose is definitely present in the flavor as well. Prune, raisin, and dark chocolate are present as well. Smooth, slick mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Outstanding. drainey (231), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 1, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown black body with a small off-white head. Aroma of chocolate with some sticky sweetness. Flavor was surprisingly good and vibrant. Bittersweet chocolate, not too sweet. I enjoyed this one. maxbeer (118), Italy Mar 20, 2007 [Bottle - a couple of month past its BB date] Almost black, thin head, moderate carbonation. A bit of coffee and chocolate in flavour and aroma, but less than expected: there is some caramel but above all a strong liquorice flavour. Bitter liquor, rum. Quite intense flavour for its strength, but not quite easy to drink. Magicdave6 (5400), London, Greater London, England Mar 20, 2007 Aroma is smokey meat, fried potatos with egg and dog breath. Taste is chestnuts, very nutty and sweet roasted beef, roasty finish. Interesting beer forsure. altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Mar 16, 2007 Bottle at home. Really dark, tar like. Grassy, funky. Raisins and sweet. Dry finish. Prunish flavour. Woody flavours. Nice. Poperinge (359), Cowtown, Alberta, Canada Feb 24, 2007 Bought this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Faint port like notes, some smoke and dark chocolate , a nice porter. Page 214 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 364 out of his 500 Classic Brews to go.
Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 11, 2007 Courtesy of OhioDad. I’ve long wanted to try this brew as English Porters are much harder to come by here and I generally find Harvey’s to be a great brewery from what I have been able to sample.

Aroma is sweet malt, cereal and LOTS of raisin but with that melange of cereal in the background the end result is that it smells like a freshly opened box of Raisin bran. Licorice notes are also a large component of the aroma. There is a dry woody smelling aroma as well. Noticeably absent...much on the way of roast or bitterness.

The body is a dark brown with deep garnet hints and a dimisnishing tan head that is initially a thumb thick. The first sip is massively of black licorice and has a creamy frothed milk feel to it. Black molasses, treacle, raisins....low bitterness. Some mild toasty notes that stop well short of roasted. Mouthfeel is thinnish by American standards...but is really maybe a bit thick compared to most English originating porters I have had. I’d like some more hops for it to be perfect in my eyes (or mouth really) but this is a great tasting brew and the smooth creamy licorice notes remind me of Baltic Porter. It’s very nice.
