Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Bottle: Aroma is very fruity with grape and moderate yeastiness. Only a touch of coffee is noticeable. Pours a dark brown with hints of orange hilights when held to the light. Insignificant tan head almost leaves the beer looking still. Flavor is very muted with some grain and hints of fruit and molasses in the middle. Finish is almost non-existant as the grainy fruitiness fades to almost nothing. Slight presence of coffee and black licorice in the finish

500 mL bottle. heavily sweet brown sugar and molasses body and aroma - one-dimensionally sweet, in fact, until the finish which is somewhat astringent and vinous. this could be fermented molasses, for all i know. not offensive, but certainly not good.

This bottled brew poured a small sized head of frothy fine to large sized mostly diminishing brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was nearly opaque and dark brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild brown malt . Its mouth feel is tingly smooth mild with a mild malt bite in the aftertaste. Its flavor contained thin malty dark brown malt notes. A very average brew.

(500ml bottle, labeled Tom Paine Original Old Porter) Small but creamy beige head atop a brown-black body. Aroma is mild, medium sweet, molasses, nutty. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, port, some plum, chocolate, light roast, earthy. Watery light-medium body with low carbonation. I find many of the bigger Harvey beers to have too much treacle, but the same elements, toned down, work better here.

Tom Paine bottle and fancied up in my Expedition snifter: I swear I had rated this but guess not.

Poured a deep muddled borwn with an initial huge frothy head and very nice lacing. The aroma has notes of prune and raisin, molasses, some coco and vanilla beans, earthy yeast esters and bready malts. The taste starts surprising twangy with lots of fruity and molasses flavor on top of a nice bitter background. Get some more milder malts in midesection before finishing off with a dash of smoke and coffee bitterness. The feel is strange, one hand it seems thin but then the palate is treated to some oily character, lively as well. A solid old-world porter.

Tom Paine label. Pours dark brown to black in color, small off white head. Flavor is a smooth chocolate, caramel, licorice and British Hops, as a guess fuggles and sweet malt. Finish is sweet caramel.

Bottle from Poperinge. Dark brown. No head. Aroma of dark wood with a touch of liquid smoke. Delicate taste with big but short finish. Some burnt notes but no sugar.
