jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA Jan 12, 2006 500 mL bottle. heavily sweet brown sugar and molasses body and aroma - one-dimensionally sweet, in fact, until the finish which is somewhat astringent and vinous. this could be fermented molasses, for all i know. not offensive, but certainly not good. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Dec 27, 2005 This bottled brew poured a small sized head of frothy fine to large sized mostly diminishing brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was nearly opaque and dark brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild brown malt . Its mouth feel is tingly smooth mild with a mild malt bite in the aftertaste. Its flavor contained thin malty dark brown malt notes. A very average brew. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Nov 28, 2005 (500ml bottle, labeled Tom Paine Original Old Porter) Small but creamy beige head atop a brown-black body. Aroma is mild, medium sweet, molasses, nutty. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, port, some plum, chocolate, light roast, earthy. Watery light-medium body with low carbonation. I find many of the bigger Harvey beers to have too much treacle, but the same elements, toned down, work better here. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Nov 12, 2005 Aroma of chocolate and coffee malts. Roasted. some raisins and rye. Clear, black coloured with a thin brown head. Taste is sweet, coffee malty, roasted, some chocolate, some hop, rye and fruits. Medium body, sticky brew. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Oct 16, 2005 Tom Paine bottle and fancied up in my Expedition snifter: I swear I had rated this but guess not.
Poured a deep muddled borwn with an initial huge frothy head and very nice lacing. The aroma has notes of prune and raisin, molasses, some coco and vanilla beans, earthy yeast esters and bready malts. The taste starts surprising twangy with lots of fruity and molasses flavor on top of a nice bitter background. Get some more milder malts in midesection before finishing off with a dash of smoke and coffee bitterness. The feel is strange, one hand it seems thin but then the palate is treated to some oily character, lively as well. A solid old-world porter. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 15, 2005 Updated: Mar 13, 2007Tom Paine label. Pours dark brown to black in color, small off white head. Flavor is a smooth chocolate, caramel, licorice and British Hops, as a guess fuggles and sweet malt. Finish is sweet caramel. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Oct 3, 2005 Bottle from Poperinge. Dark brown. No head. Aroma of dark wood with a touch of liquid smoke.
