Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Black color with a thin white head. Very attractive sweet chocolate aroma. Flavor really fills out in the finish with mild chocolate. Very easy to drink and quite tastey.

Bottled. Nice chocolat and light roasted aroma. Black color, light brown small rocky head that disappears quickly leaving no lace so leaving you with a glass that looks like a glass of cola. Sweet, some chocolat, light roasted, bit cola flavor, light bodied (thin?). Actually very drinkable but not quite my style. I’m more into aggresive stouts.

Whatever the name, this was pretty good. Nice dark body, almost black. Complex nose: coffee, choclate, vanilla, smokiness. Sweet. Medium bodied and nice smooth feel in the mouth. Minimal carbonation. Good flavor. Sweetness but not cloying. Chocolate, coffee. Good stuff.

Dark brown, not black, and loosely formed head. Gentle coffee aroma but also milk and grape. Moderately short finish, caramel, toasty, roasted, and some cardboard. Pretty good if you get past a slightly lactic edge. (2004 Christmas Party, my #11, group’s #5)

Bottle. A dark brown color with a laced brown head. Vanilla, toasted malts, dry and nicely balanced for a porter. A long enjoyable toasted malt aftertaste. Christmas Party 2004 ranked 5/15 (mine) and 5/15 (group).

Very dark brown color with a small tiny bubbled tan head. Lightly oily and silky feel. Fig pudding and treacle aromas. Treacle and mild earthy malt flavors. Light iron and thin port finish.

Dark, roasted malt aroma with bourbon notes. Nice, but somewhat subtle. Dark ruby red, brown in color. no head. Smooth flavor; dry with chocolate malts. A little too lactose in the finish. Ok. Probably the best of the Harvey’s line I’ve had. But that’s not saying much.

Sweet carmel nose infused with a hint of alcohol. It is pretty flat and mostly tastes like coffee and burnt chocolate. I just can’t seem to find a porter that I really like.
