Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Bottle. Pours black with a long lasting, permanent head. Served cellar temp. There are aromas of fresh gingerbread, homemade cookies, molasses, toffee: very spicy too, like winter baking fresh out of the oven. Mouthfeel is light, slightly watery. Flavour is less interesting than the aromas. I taste some molasses, raisin, chocolate.

Dark brown, thin tan head. Fairly mild flavour, roated malts, hint of coffee, chocolate, brown sugar. Was hoping for some more punch. Very easy going.

I’ve had this before and remembered it being better. Aroma is a of roasted malts and molasses and taste is all molasses. I don’t get any coffee type flavours but just a hint of bitter chocolate. Somewhat astringent with thin body. Cheers!

500 ml bottle from the LCBO. pours deep reddish/brown with a nice tan head that lingers and laces. the aroma is quite fruity with a touch of roasted malt. very thin flavours with roasted malt making up most of the flavour. thin and in need of hops. not a good buy at $3.95 per 500 ml bottle.

Very deep ruby in colour with a thin but lingering tan coloured head, excellent lacing. The aroma has some light sweetness, light roast, some chocolate, raisins and molasses. The flavour is again lightly roasty, high sweetness, a bit watery with some chocolate and liquorice. Roasty but watery mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes thin.

While this was somewhat roasty, it was quite thin. It was okay but I guess that I just wanted more.

500ml bottle from LCBO in Peterborough, Ontario.
Opened on March 2, 2008.
Best before June 2008.

A vinous porter somehow, interesting treacle flavour. Pretty complex, I can find coffee, chocolate and raisings among other things from this. For its strenght an admirably tasty porter.

Bottle from Tiffany’s in Kalamazoo, MI. Dark brown with medium tan creamy head. Aroma is sweet roasted/toasted malt, a little red fruit, not bad. Sweet red fruit and roasted malt, a little alc, nice roastiness, well rounded. Medium to thin body that is slightly chalky. Not half bad, a solid, sweet porter.

275ml bottle celebrating TILs 2-0 over Strømsgodset. Ruby-black body under a thin, filmy layer. Dark malts, a bit burnt, to the nose. Dark fruits and bitter malts to the flavour. Flat carbonation. Watered palate - I had expected more from this one (Coutesy of Wivi-Ann, 06.07.2008).
