Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Pours a dark brown with light tan head. Chocolate, roasty malt, caramel, oak, hops, and a bit of fruit. Finishes with a little metallic taste, but still pretty good. Mouthfeel is slightly thin.

Nice combination of somewhat plummy, coffeeish molasses malts with a bitter, burnt flavour in the end. Soapy head and watery low-carb body. Somewhat metallic in the end. Kinda liked it.

500ml Bottle: Pours dark brown, a very thin beige head that left good lacing as I drank. The aroma is very light and mild; oak, cherries, rum, roasted malt. The flavour is actually very good, nicely balanced with a good blend of all the good things you look for in a stout. Caramel sweetness, deep roasted malt, plenty of hops, grass all come through in large amounts. The mouthfeel is somewhat watery but that’s about my only complaint with this very fine porter.

Bottle from the LCBO. Deep ruby-brown with a small mocha head. Aroma of roast malt, brown sugar, banana(?!), faint hints of smoke and coffee. Medium mouthfeel. Flavour is quite roasty, with little of the sweetness suggested by the aroma - it’s more bitter and woody, with some roasted nuts, coffee and charred malt. Quite enjoyable.

nice light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, some smoke, and a light nuttiness. Flavour is slightly roasty, i’m getting a HUGE metallic taste i just cant shake, it lingers quite a bit. The finish is bitter, and smokey. As i get near the bottom of my glass, the metallic tatse seems to mellow a bit, but its still there. But now i can taste the roasty nuttiness in the flavour, a decent porter, without the metallic tatse, would have been awesome.

Nearly opaque, dark black porter with a foamy dark tan head that lingers. The nose is brown sugar with some fresh fruit including, surprisingly, green apple. The body is carbonated very lightly, almost too lightly. Some bitter hops at the front turn into a sweet malty middle with a lingering hop bitterness into the end. This is a good, tasty porter, but leaves something desired. It could use more roastiness, but I’m not complaining at this point.

1/2 liter pasteurized bottle date coded as being bottled 4 weeks ago. The decant puts a dark chestnut ale in the glass with some ruby highlights, 1 finger thick mocha colored cap that lasts and laces. Aroma is dried fruits and coffee/cocoa, some molasses and a wisp of grassyness. Oleo mouth feel, sturdy body, rich roasted and crystal malt spine. The dried fruits do not carry into the flavor which is rich with rich roast coffee-dark coca flavor profile, oily palate makes the great roastiness "cling"....light hint of sweetness from the crystal but overall the roasted grains dominate...finish is lightly astringent with hop and charred husk...very pleasant, well balanced and incredibly drinkable. Easily one of the top 3 London porters

Pours a black opaque body with low carbonation and a thin, lasting beige creamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with roasted cereals hints. Its taste is sharp and well balanced. It ends with a long roasty/bitter finish. Well done Porter.
