Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Uber dark pour. Looks like a black stout with a thin tan head. Aroma of toffee, licorice, caramel and chocolate. Very dark choclat and coffee taste wtih a licorice aftertaste. A little to thick and the finish is too dry but rather good overall. A nice porter.

Bottle. Pours black with some ruby hues and an average size diminishing fluffy tan head. Aroma of lightly roasted caramel malt, light chocolate, dark fruit and molasses. Faint smoke and hops there too. Flavour follows the aroma: Light roasted caramel malt, dark fruit, molasses, milk chocolate and a light coffee-ish bitter finish. Average to medium bodied, oily mouthfeel. Pretty good, though not something I’d drink several of, I prefer something like Fullers London Porter -- still, it’s a very well made beer.

Black with creamy head. All five grains: rye, barley, spelt, oats. Aroma of mollasses and woody as well as multi-grainy. Substantive mouthfeel. Sweetish yet classic porter. Drinkable and serviceable but I could not have pint after pint.

Bien plaisant!

Bottle 500 ml
Appearance :Dark brown with some ruby light sipping trough , velvet like tanned smallish top .3+
Nose :Brown malts with good dose of milky chocolate entering into more bitter end.7+
Flavour/Palate : Medium light body with bitter chocolate blended with green woody character. Not as harmonious as aroma. Disappointing empty front. Richer and fuller sides and finish that could not make up for rest. Uneven brew that led to disappointment. This could be really neat brew only if..

Pours opaque black, not much head. Oily aroma with some yeasty notes. Fairly smooth, some milky chocolate texture and flavors. This is a beer to let linger in the mouth to appreciate.
