Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Bottle at the Royal Oak, Borough. Slightly thin, malty and sweet porter, softly flavoured, and with that odd Harveys house character, described by some as ’woody’.

Rating for <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/ Tom Paine Original Old Porter

Pours a deep garnet/black with a short, wet, khaki head. Peaty aroma with an excess of prune and wee touches of wine and cherries. A thin, wet mouthfeel finishes dry with mild astringence. Flavor suggests mild oxidation, but there is no "best by" date on my bottle to reference. Mostly wooden and pruney flavour with some dark chocolate, port wine and small-brewed coffee. Nice, but definitely an acquired taste.

Pretty damn black. Interesting and intriguing nose. Whiffs of apple cider, caramel and milk chocolate. Non aggresive and certainly not offensive but there isn’t much going on here. Front is mainly sweet and soft with some diverse earthy tones. Mid is lightly roasted coffee, some light dark fruitiness and milk chocolate. Finish has a hint of pepper, notes of grapes and a lingering dry, nutty and chocolatey presense on the palate.

Wow! Different labelling on my bottle than shown here. This is soft and mineralized, black malt(chocolatey) to the extreme, toffeeish, sweet, very slightly bitter. A great beer - rich and creamy. Long lasting thin head. Intensely drinkable.

Dark brown color, with a creamy fluffy tan-colored head, leaving some laces, toasted, roasted malt, fruity raisiny nose, with a cookie dough, molasses, coffee note, with a hint liquorice spiciness and dark chocolate in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a mild toasted, caramelized, roasted malt character with some dark chocolatey, burnt toast, and coffee bean roasty flavors, with some molasses, liquorice accents, leading towards a chocolatey, roasty, dry bitterness finish.

Whatever the name, this was pretty good. Nice dark body, almost black. Complex nose: coffee, choclate, vanilla, smokiness. Sweet. Medium bodied and nice smooth feel in the mouth. Minimal carbonation. Good flavor. Sweetness but not cloying. Chocolate, coffee. Good stuff.

Pours oily black. Thin head, but strong lacing. Taste is molassis, wood, and hints of smoke. Finish is watery but retains the dark sweet molassis feel, with touches of roasted bitterness. Really not a bad porter at all, but the body could use a little bit more muscle.

Dark, roasted malt aroma with bourbon notes. Nice, but somewhat subtle. Dark ruby red, brown in color. no head. Smooth flavor; dry with chocolate malts. A little too lactose in the finish. Ok. Probably the best of the Harvey’s line I’ve had. But that’s not saying much.
