Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Pours a dark brown with light tan head. Chocolate, roasty malt, caramel, oak, hops, and a bit of fruit. Finishes with a little metallic taste, but still pretty good. Mouthfeel is slightly thin.

Bottle from Tiffany’s in Kalamazoo, MI. Dark brown with medium tan creamy head. Aroma is sweet roasted/toasted malt, a little red fruit, not bad. Sweet red fruit and roasted malt, a little alc, nice roastiness, well rounded. Medium to thin body that is slightly chalky. Not half bad, a solid, sweet porter.

Bottle - Pitch black, tiny head, malt-chocolate aroma, quite a mild flavour kind of like a mild tipped cigar, nice but nothing special

Grainy aroma, with bits of chocolate, resiny hops, some earthy and dusty notes as well. Medium bodied, some black malt character, not much chocolate. Molasses. Subdued hoppiness. Fine, but not particularly interesting in the long run.

Tom Paine label. Pours dark brown to black in color, small off white head. Flavor is a smooth chocolate, caramel, licorice and British Hops, as a guess fuggles and sweet malt. Finish is sweet caramel.

275ml bottle. Hard black with a wisp of head soon gone. Aroma starts with creamy coffee, first taste reveals a light roast with a sweet edge. Aroma starts to soften to a sweet liquorice, flavour stars to dullen a little and certainly become sweeter. Savour is the fading fruit finish that tempers the sweetness and leaves a little lingering chocolate in its wake.

500 ml bottle courtesy jerc, best before JUN08. Dark ruby amber colour with a mostly diminishing frothy off-white head. Lightly acidic and roasty coffee aroma with notes of bittersweet chocolate. Bittersweet chocolate, lightly roasty, lightly acidic, and fruity flavours with a faint metallic tinge in the roasty finish. Medium bodied, smooth and almost silky mouthfeel.
