Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Dark brown can’t see through it at all. Small tan head. Roasted malts and bitter dark chocolate. Roasted malt flavour, with hints of smoke and a mute dry bitter dark chocolate aftertaste, lingerings of bitter blackberries off in the distance. Chewy watery body. Delicious.

Bottled sample via gregclow. Near black in colour with lower than average carbonation. Aromas are of burnt toffee, tar, and a bit of fruit. Flavors of sweet caramel malts and fruit mix with some milder coffee and chocolate notes. There’s some smoke and leather notes as well. Slick, albeit somewhat watery, body. A pretty good English style porter, but could do with some more roasted malt notes to balance things out.

Pours a deep dark brown with a light tan head. The aroma has chocolate and roasted notes. The flavor is moderatly roasted with a dark chocolate background and a slightly sweet finish.

[Bottle from Ron] Roasty, fruit, house character, dried fruit, tobacco, dundee cake, full, vinous notes, touch of tarness, dry, roasty. Most delicious.

500 mL bottle from LCBO, served at room temp. in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep ruby-black, presumably clear, smallish mocha head. Aroma: Quite fruity – lots of dates and prunes, some cherries and tree fruits, green notes (hops?), slightly smoky, flinty dark malts, a bit of molasses, Palate: Medium body, barely a hint of carbonation. Flav.: Still lots of prunes and dark fruits but more malty, a bit of dark bread crust, some ashen dark malts a bit of strong black coffee, hints of leafy hops; dry, a slight hint of tartness, moderately bitter with a strong aftertaste of dark-roasted malts.

Good job, Mr. Harvey.

1/2 liter pasteurized bottle date coded as being bottled 4 weeks ago. The decant puts a dark chestnut ale in the glass with some ruby highlights, 1 finger thick mocha colored cap that lasts and laces. Aroma is dried fruits and coffee/cocoa, some molasses and a wisp of grassyness. Oleo mouth feel, sturdy body, rich roasted and crystal malt spine. The dried fruits do not carry into the flavor which is rich with rich roast coffee-dark coca flavor profile, oily palate makes the great roastiness "cling"....light hint of sweetness from the crystal but overall the roasted grains dominate...finish is lightly astringent with hop and charred husk...very pleasant, well balanced and incredibly drinkable. Easily one of the top 3 London porters

500 ml bottle from the LCBO. pours deep reddish/brown with a nice tan head that lingers and laces. the aroma is quite fruity with a touch of roasted malt. very thin flavours with roasted malt making up most of the flavour. thin and in need of hops. not a good buy at $3.95 per 500 ml bottle.

Nice dark heavy porter. Almost black poor, heavy malt flavors. Rich but not overly syrpy. A nice full-bodied porter
