Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

hop sack and cedar aroma, very very dark tawny hue with a brilliant thick off white head, this porter has a medicinal feel to it with some bitter chocolate notes, the finish is long and dry, superb.

Very dark brown with a medium sized brown head. Aroma of port, dark fruits, cocoa, and perhaps a touch of molasses. Flavor is very vinous, the port character present in the nose is definitely present in the flavor as well. Prune, raisin, and dark chocolate are present as well. Smooth, slick mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Outstanding.

500 ml bottle - pours the colour of tar with a toffee coloured head that coats the inside of the glass. Aroma of dried fruits, some spice, plum, roasted barley, coffee. Flavour has that and more - more cinnamon, dry hazelnut character, espresso bitterness. Slightly sour as well. Thick, chalky mouthfeel. Dry, bitter finish. Very good porter.

500ml Bottle: Pours dark brown, a very thin beige head that left good lacing as I drank. The aroma is very light and mild; oak, cherries, rum, roasted malt. The flavour is actually very good, nicely balanced with a good blend of all the good things you look for in a stout. Caramel sweetness, deep roasted malt, plenty of hops, grass all come through in large amounts. The mouthfeel is somewhat watery but that’s about my only complaint with this very fine porter.

16.9 oz. bottle, labeled "Harvey’s Tom Paine Original Old Porter." Aroma of licorice (I’m not a fan), dark malts, and chocolate; more like that of a brown ale than a typical porter. Pours a very dark brown color with a red hue and a small amount of beige head. Metallic, sour, burnt flavor with elements of chalk, coal, and dirt. Rust-like burning aftertaste. Sharply fizzy carbonation. Light to medium body. Yuck! To its credit, the beer starts out terrible but ends up merely very bad. I sure hope I had a bad bottle, because if that’s what this is supposed to taste like, and it scores in the 79th percentile overall, I might as well just stop drinking beer completely.

This porter poured the usual black colour with a rocky tan head. To the nose you could get scents of molasass, corn syrup and dark sweet malt. First taste was sweet and thick tasting with an almost oily mouthfeel. Tastes include big time molasass, smoke and a slight bitter hop flavour. The finish is slightly smokey and burnt tasting. The palate has a lasting bitter flavour on the back of the tongue with that molasass flavour shining through. Not bad but lacking in flavour. Over all is like taking a sip of old books.

Bottle. Pours black with a long lasting, permanent head. Served cellar temp. There are aromas of fresh gingerbread, homemade cookies, molasses, toffee: very spicy too, like winter baking fresh out of the oven. Mouthfeel is light, slightly watery. Flavour is less interesting than the aromas. I taste some molasses, raisin, chocolate.

I tried this beer on September 23, 2008 at "Smokeless Joes" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a very dark brown, with a creamy tan coloured head (which lasted). The aroma was weak with hints of roasted malt, coffee, and chicoree. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with medium carbonation. The flavour was malt, licorice, and sour coffee.
