Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

This bottled brew poured a small sized head of frothy fine to large sized mostly diminishing brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was nearly opaque and dark brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild brown malt . Its mouth feel is tingly smooth mild with a mild malt bite in the aftertaste. Its flavor contained thin malty dark brown malt notes. A very average brew.

Bottle. Pours black with some ruby hues and an average size diminishing fluffy tan head. Aroma of lightly roasted caramel malt, light chocolate, dark fruit and molasses. Faint smoke and hops there too. Flavour follows the aroma: Light roasted caramel malt, dark fruit, molasses, milk chocolate and a light coffee-ish bitter finish. Average to medium bodied, oily mouthfeel. Pretty good, though not something I’d drink several of, I prefer something like Fullers London Porter -- still, it’s a very well made beer.

Bottle. Small tan head with fair amount of lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation, and a dark brown hue. Malt and some alcohol aroma. Coffee and malt flavor. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Medium bodied porter. Definitely not one of the better porters that I have rated. Disappointing.

Near black colored with little beige head. Rich vinous and roasted aroma with some wooden oaky notes. Medium bodied. Flavor is also rich with roastiness dominating, thin wood and even smoke comes up. Good beer.
