Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Bottle (From Middle Farm, Nr Lewes, BB Dec 07). Deep oily brown with quite a dark head. Roasty malts liquorice and lots of smoky wood to start. Fairly dry with some roasty bitterness and lots of woodyness on the finish. Pretty good with the slightly OTT woody flavours being quite tasty.

Dark Brown Coloring. Tints of Red When Held To the Light. Good Head. Chocolate Aroma, Little Burnt. Flavor is of a Very Good Porter. Some Roasts, Coffee and Chocolate...Little Thick, Creamy and Very Easy Going Down.. Not alot of Character but Decent Porter Either Way.

Medicinal nose with peppermint, malt and coffee. In taste and smell it reminds a little bit on the brewers Imperial Extra Double Stout, it is like it's little brother. Dark brown color with hints of red. Medium´frothy head, leaving laces. Coffee and peppermint taste. Sour, almost like buttermilk, but thin, medium lasting.

Bottle courtesy of Jerc: Poured a deep black color porter with a small foamy head with limited retention and no lacing. Aroma of roasted bitter malt with some light dry coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by some roasted coffee notes with some light sweet notes. Body is very average with some medium to low carbonation. No a lot of complexity in this beer but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Bottled. Hmmmm beer my trustworthy friend…. How good is porter?! Dark and sweet this just keeps begs to be drunk with a smile. Black with fine brown lacy head. Sweet roasted malt nose just begs drinking. Sweet and syrupy it’s not unlike an imperial stout at first taste. Burnt malt woody flavour with a dry ashy finish.

bottle. pours dark brown with creamy tan head. aroma seems a bit oxidized, paper, raisins, hints of port. flavors are sweet licorice, vodka flavor, some dark fruit and chocolate. thin watery body. my bottle was probably mistreated because i dont get the high ratings at all.

Labeled as "Harveys Tom Paine Original Old Porter". Pours a very dark brown with a slight reddish hue to it. A very interesting porter. The aroma is more of raison than anything. Flavor is quite complex with hints of dark, dried fruit and some of the usual chocolate and coffee undertones. Reminds me a lot of an aged sherry or port. Very unique brew; probably more traditional. I will have to revisit this one again when I have more time to sit and ponder the flavors since this one is so different and complex. That’s what I love most about porters! 16.9 oz bottle, $4.30 at the Winking Lizard Tavern (Crosswoods).

Black as hell. Very dry and a bit sweet. A bit bready and bitter. This is a nice complex porter.
