Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

275ml bottle mail order from the brewery. O wow! I had this bottle conditioned way back in 2002 before I started my love affair with Harveys and scored it 4. Hmm. This is better than a 4, so I think I would have underscored that version. This is wonderful. There’s chocolate and coffee - real nice, gently roasty, with little flashes here and there, and wrapped round with that warm and slightly burning hop. There’s bits of blood and metal, there’s musty wood, and damp wool, soy sauce and rain on hot railings, there’s wine in the finish and raw meat. It’s a soft carbonation - almost non-existent. This slips down easy yet is so exciting. A genuine 1859 recipe by a master brewer using the unique and glorious Harvey’s yeast. What’s not to like? Stunning!

Mmmm. The place i get these beers from must have had them for ages. This one also tasted well aged. Very smoothed out and rich. Heavy roasted flavor, with a bit of hoppiness. Hops have an odd astringency that’s not at all unpleasant. A bit sour, with a touch of prune/raisin flavor. Highly recommended for those of you that favor porters. Beer as art.

hop sack and cedar aroma, very very dark tawny hue with a brilliant thick off white head, this porter has a medicinal feel to it with some bitter chocolate notes, the finish is long and dry, superb.

This is very complex - treacly, with port-like flavours and aromas, a rich dark fruit character, an oily body, and a touch of dark chocolate as well. A top five porter.

275ml bottle from brewery shop. Black with faint ruby edges, thick tan head. Excellent almost peaty malt aroma. This is thick and unctious. Thick heavy tarry roasted malt aromas. Seriously this beats a lot of porters/stouts and impy stouts with bigger reputations. All the intense flavours, but no ridiculous massive hops on finish. This is awesome. Menthol, eucalyptus. Drank at room temperature on Lewes to Ashford train with the Inspiral Carpets.

I enjoyed this from a bottle called Tom Paine’s Original Old Porter. Poured to a used motor oil black, with medium tan head that dissipated soon and left some lacing. Aroma was a strong and pleasant malt chocolate-caramel that lasted for most of the drink. Flavor was a very tasty mix of malt chocolate, caramel, vanilla and a hint of coffee. This all led to a well rounded finish that was long, almost a little too sweet, and very warming for a beer with only 4.8% abv. This would make a good winter warmer.

A special treat from reakt in trade. A honey sweetness and reminder of fall in the nose. Pours dark....drk as a black steers toucous on a moonless prarie night. A reserved tight dense tan head sits upon the viscous liquid as if placed there by studious and certain hands. (feel free to use that one in yer ads Mr. Brewmaster). I will not bother to go into particulars about this lovely brew other than to say only the English are able to achieve this level of perfection with dark beers. My desire has been satieated. Again, reakt sank the Bismark with sending this one to me, so..... "The Hood found the Bismark and on that fatal day.....The Bismark started firing from 15 miles away! We’ve gotta sink the Bismark was the battle sound...but when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down." Ahhh Johnny Horton.

I agree with OAKES, I found it quite good. Fine nose and a good finish, more to the style than many.
