Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

[Bottle - a couple of month past its BB date] Almost black, thin head, moderate carbonation. A bit of coffee and chocolate in flavour and aroma, but less than expected: there is some caramel but above all a strong liquorice flavour. Bitter liquor, rum. Quite intense flavour for its strength, but not quite easy to drink.

Pretty damn black. Interesting and intriguing nose. Whiffs of apple cider, caramel and milk chocolate. Non aggresive and certainly not offensive but there isn’t much going on here. Front is mainly sweet and soft with some diverse earthy tones. Mid is lightly roasted coffee, some light dark fruitiness and milk chocolate. Finish has a hint of pepper, notes of grapes and a lingering dry, nutty and chocolatey presense on the palate.

Aroma is smokey meat, fried potatos with egg and dog breath. Taste is chestnuts, very nutty and sweet roasted beef, roasty finish. Interesting beer forsure.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from Kris Wines. Black/brown with a swifly dissipating tan head that settles to a bubbly film. Caramel malt aroma with a bit of vanilla and chocolate. Decent chocolate malt flavour that is let down by obvious cardboard and metallic notes. Was much worse when first opened, but now it has had time to settle it’s mellowed to something drinkable and quite enjoyable. Bitter chocolate finish with some very slight hops showing. Nice creamy mouthfeel which is almost worth a ’4’.

275ml botle. Poured a very dark colour with a small off white head. Strong aroma of roasted malt, withsome chocolate & coffee. Reasonably bitter in the mouth with both liqourice and coffee to the fore. Very palatable.

Bottle. Brown with a tan head. Malty with hints of smoke. Licorice, vanilla, with hints of wet paper a bit oxidized one might say oh well.

Pours a dark brown with light tan head. Chocolate, roasty malt, caramel, oak, hops, and a bit of fruit. Finishes with a little metallic taste, but still pretty good. Mouthfeel is slightly thin.
