Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Medicinal nose with peppermint, malt and coffee. In taste and smell it reminds a little bit on the brewers Imperial Extra Double Stout, it is like it's little brother. Dark brown color with hints of red. Medium´frothy head, leaving laces. Coffee and peppermint taste. Sour, almost like buttermilk, but thin, medium lasting.

Bottled sample via gregclow. Near black in colour with lower than average carbonation. Aromas are of burnt toffee, tar, and a bit of fruit. Flavors of sweet caramel malts and fruit mix with some milder coffee and chocolate notes. There’s some smoke and leather notes as well. Slick, albeit somewhat watery, body. A pretty good English style porter, but could do with some more roasted malt notes to balance things out.

Harveys Tom Paine original old porter in a pint bottle. Pours reddish black, thin head formed after emptying the bottle. Rich at first but kinda bland and watery finish, very smooth, roasted and coffee flavours. A bit boring for my taste.

Pitch dark black with small creamy tan head that thins quickly. Faint roasted nut and molasses aroma. Carbonated dark burnt roasted bittersweet chocolate. Light on flavour with a bittersweet burnt roast aftertaste.

Bottle 500 ml
Appearance :Dark brown with some ruby light sipping trough , velvet like tanned smallish top .3+
Nose :Brown malts with good dose of milky chocolate entering into more bitter end.7+
Flavour/Palate : Medium light body with bitter chocolate blended with green woody character. Not as harmonious as aroma. Disappointing empty front. Richer and fuller sides and finish that could not make up for rest. Uneven brew that led to disappointment. This could be really neat brew only if..

Bottled. Nice chocolat and light roasted aroma. Black color, light brown small rocky head that disappears quickly leaving no lace so leaving you with a glass that looks like a glass of cola. Sweet, some chocolat, light roasted, bit cola flavor, light bodied (thin?). Actually very drinkable but not quite my style. I’m more into aggresive stouts.
