Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Deep dark brown coat with a tinge of rad. Nice lacing and foam. Delectable brew showing coffee, cocoa, hints of licorice and other things like maybe tart berry fruit - subtle, full and warming with a long lingering dry finish. A solid four from just one tasting.

Bottled. Creamy and enough foamy head. Black and dense color, much gloomy. Rich and alcoholic scent: distinct notes of coffee, parched malt, burnt wood and bitter cocoa. Much balmy and pleasant aroma. Strong, alcoholic and solid taste. Not much prickly but dense, full and protract with a decided and very long bitter final.

Bottled as Harveys Tom Paine Original Old Porter. Poured a clear garnet-tinted cola brown with a short-lived cap of beige head. Aroma picked up sweet, roasty cocoa, dark fruit skins, brown sugar, and molasses.. light herbal accents. Flavor found layers of roasty dark chocolate and cocoa, plums, dark fruit skins, and molasses with a mild, grainy herbal bitterness... very tasty! A hair shy of medium-bodied with wonderful layering of flavors.. left a long, sweet, cocoa and raisiny finish. Just a lovely brew all around!

Bottle. Dark brown black body with a small off-white head. Aroma of chocolate with some sticky sweetness. Flavor was surprisingly good and vibrant. Bittersweet chocolate, not too sweet. I enjoyed this one.

500ml Bottle: Pours dark brown, a very thin beige head that left good lacing as I drank. The aroma is very light and mild; oak, cherries, rum, roasted malt. The flavour is actually very good, nicely balanced with a good blend of all the good things you look for in a stout. Caramel sweetness, deep roasted malt, plenty of hops, grass all come through in large amounts. The mouthfeel is somewhat watery but that’s about my only complaint with this very fine porter.

Tom Paine label. Pours dark brown to black in color, small off white head. Flavor is a smooth chocolate, caramel, licorice and British Hops, as a guess fuggles and sweet malt. Finish is sweet caramel.

A deep dark porter with a weak light moka head and low carbonatation. Aroma is pleasant, with plums, currants, licorice and chocolate. In mouth, a crisp dryish bitter chocolate with herbal notes, tobacco, and light peated notes. Medium bodied, but very complex. A pleasant surprise. LCBO Nov. 2007. BB June 2008.

Bottle from the LCBO. Deep ruby-brown with a small mocha head. Aroma of roast malt, brown sugar, banana(?!), faint hints of smoke and coffee. Medium mouthfeel. Flavour is quite roasty, with little of the sweetness suggested by the aroma - it’s more bitter and woody, with some roasted nuts, coffee and charred malt. Quite enjoyable.
