Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Pours a nice deep dark brown, nearly completely opaque with a thin creamy pale brown head. Smell is very prominent, lots of roasted malts. Some dark chocolate, some coffee, and a hint of raisins. Fllavour is very sweet at first, and a nice bit fruity too. Finish is bitter like coffee and dark roasted malt. Not much to speak of as far as hops go. It’s nice and chewy in the mouth, maybe a touch over carbonated. Nice beer though.

A vinous porter somehow, interesting treacle flavour. Pretty complex, I can find coffee, chocolate and raisings among other things from this. For its strenght an admirably tasty porter.

500 mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto for $3.70. Pours a black with a smal brown head that dissipates quickly. Roasted malt aroma, but not overly strong. First taste is very nice - thick and oatmealy. Stays a treat all the way down with its nice thick feel.

275ml bottle. Hard black with a wisp of head soon gone. Aroma starts with creamy coffee, first taste reveals a light roast with a sweet edge. Aroma starts to soften to a sweet liquorice, flavour stars to dullen a little and certainly become sweeter. Savour is the fading fruit finish that tempers the sweetness and leaves a little lingering chocolate in its wake.

Uber dark pour. Looks like a black stout with a thin tan head. Aroma of toffee, licorice, caramel and chocolate. Very dark choclat and coffee taste wtih a licorice aftertaste. A little to thick and the finish is too dry but rather good overall. A nice porter.

Beautiful cola-brown. Healthy, long-lasting brown head, easily adjusted by pour. Toasty, smoky, molasses hiits first with malty finish. Good hop balance, bitter, grapefruity finish. Maltiness lingers - five minutes later you know you’ve had a Porter.
