Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Black with creamy head. All five grains: rye, barley, spelt, oats. Aroma of mollasses and woody as well as multi-grainy. Substantive mouthfeel. Sweetish yet classic porter. Drinkable and serviceable but I could not have pint after pint.

Bottle with the a.k.a. of Tom Paine’s Original Porter: This pours out almost black, but remains brown with a dark brown, slender head. The aroma is bitter chocolate with deep roasted malts and traces of coffee. Very smooth in the mouth, the flavor is roasted malt and dark, burnt chocolate, and some woodiness. It finishes on a dry coffee note. Very satisfying.

Bien plaisant!

(Bottle, Royal Oak, Borough, London, 23 April 2008, room temperature) Dark brown, almost black, with frothy pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dark fruit and chocolate, hints of smoke. Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, lovely notes of cocoa and a short coffee bitterness in the finish. Fairly thin body, but great aroma and flavours. Classic english porter.

Appearance: Opaque black with ruby highlights. Thick tan head. Aroma: Roasty and light maltiness caramel and ovaltine. Flavour: Roasty and toffee, mildly sweet with a dry cocoa finish, Big roasty, malty, ovaltine hang. Burnt toast and light clean acidity fromn the roast. Mouthfeel: Light bodied, chewy and creamy carbonation. Overall: A refreshing dark beer. Lots of roast malt. Sweet at first but finishes dry and clean. LIght on the palate. It would be good with something salty - pretzels, nuts, y’know.

Bottle 275ml.
Clear dark dark brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate, english licorice, vanilla notes. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily to creamy, carbonation is soft. [20090104]

Pours a very dark brown almost black. Small head which sort of suprised me. Aroma of flavour of roasted malts, coffee, molasses, black licorice, chocolate. Finish is a roasted bitter taste. Pretty damn good porter.
