Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Pours as black as motor oil with a thin spotty beige head that leaves behind some nice lacing. Aroma and flavours are very thin, just roasted malts, but I think that may change as the beer warms up....Well, I let this beer sit for about half and hour and it seems I was right, BIG Chocolatey notes, with strong caramel undertones, very heavey and satisfying aroma. Flavours start out with a touch of cocoa, and wich leads to a sweet caramel flavour in the middle, then some roasted malt bitterness that quickley gives way to the cocoa again which sticks around through to finish, a couple flavours in there I couldn’t quite pin, especially near the end. A touch watery for a porter, but still pretty damn good, very enjoyable.

I tried this beer on September 23, 2008 at "Smokeless Joes" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a very dark brown, with a creamy tan coloured head (which lasted). The aroma was weak with hints of roasted malt, coffee, and chicoree. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with medium carbonation. The flavour was malt, licorice, and sour coffee.

Wonderful dark pour, with a tan colored head, which slowly diminishes, with attractive lacing. The aroma is not overly strong, but suggests caramel malts. Flavour has a nice bitter chocolate hit, swiftly followed by smooth caramel. The finish is heavy on roasted malt. A well-balanced job in the taste department. At first a little watery on the palate, but a muted carbonation stirs up some creaminess, and actually becomes quite pleasant. Overall, a solid, but not spectacular, porter. Rerated after drinking a bottle that had been sitting for a few months. Vinous notes are beginning to appear in the flavour, and the texture seems even smoother. Its aging well.

500ml bottle bought at a deli in Petersfield, Hants. Dark brown with reddish undertones and a decent, frothy off-white head that left plenty of lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, caramel and roasted malts. Full mouth feel, with more sweetness to start, bitter chocolate, coffee and spice. Decent bitter finish with a touch of raisin fruit. Very enjoyable.

Bottle, LCBO. Pitch oily black, decent sized brownish head. Nice aroma, lots of molasses, light chocolate, some roast. Good taste - acidic side of things but still milk chocolate and molasses. Dry. A solid porter, LCBO got one right here.

Pours a black opaque body with low carbonation and a thin, lasting beige creamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with roasted cereals hints. Its taste is sharp and well balanced. It ends with a long roasty/bitter finish. Well done Porter.

Bottle. Poured a black color with an average rocky light brown head that diminished slowly with fair lacing. Moderate sweet prune malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth slick texture. Medium sweet malty flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration. Complex sweet brew.
