SilkTork (3865), Rochester, Kent, England Jan 24, 2008 275ml bottle mail order from the brewery. O wow! I had this bottle conditioned way back in 2002 before I started my love affair with Harveys and scored it 4. Hmm. This is better than a 4, so I think I would have underscored that version. This is wonderful. There’s chocolate and coffee - real nice, gently roasty, with little flashes here and there, and wrapped round with that warm and slightly burning hop. There’s bits of blood and metal, there’s musty wood, and damp wool, soy sauce and rain on hot railings, there’s wine in the finish and raw meat. It’s a soft carbonation - almost non-existent. This slips down easy yet is so exciting. A genuine 1859 recipe by a master brewer using the unique and glorious Harvey’s yeast. What’s not to like? Stunning!
radiomgb (1749), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 8, 2008 Very deep ruby in colour with a thin but lingering tan coloured head, excellent lacing. The aroma has some light sweetness, light roast, some chocolate, raisins and molasses. The flavour is again lightly roasty, high sweetness, a bit watery with some chocolate and liquorice. Roasty but watery mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes thin.
While this was somewhat roasty, it was quite thin. It was okay but I guess that I just wanted more.
500ml bottle from LCBO in Peterborough, Ontario.
Opened on March 2, 2008.
Best before June 2008.
Mitch_Wayne (100), Kokkola, Finland Aug 7, 2008 A vinous porter somehow, interesting treacle flavour. Pretty complex, I can find coffee, chocolate and raisings among other things from this. For its strenght an admirably tasty porter. xnoxhatex (788), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle from Tiffany’s in Kalamazoo, MI. Dark brown with medium tan creamy head. Aroma is sweet roasted/toasted malt, a little red fruit, not bad. Sweet red fruit and roasted malt, a little alc, nice roastiness, well rounded. Medium to thin body that is slightly chalky. Not half bad, a solid, sweet porter. Rune (1508), Tromsø, Norway Jul 7, 2008 275ml bottle celebrating TILs 2-0 over Strømsgodset. Ruby-black body under a thin, filmy layer. Dark malts, a bit burnt, to the nose. Dark fruits and bitter malts to the flavour. Flat carbonation. Watered palate - I had expected more from this one (Coutesy of Wivi-Ann, 06.07.2008). Svesse (1676), Hässelby, Sweden May 3, 2008 (Bottle, Royal Oak, Borough, London, 23 April 2008, room temperature) Dark brown, almost black, with frothy pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dark fruit and chocolate, hints of smoke. Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, lovely notes of cocoa and a short coffee bitterness in the finish. Fairly thin body, but great aroma and flavours. Classic english porter.
