Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
Winner of the First Prize Gold Medal at the International Brewers’ Exhibition in 1980, this beer is brewed to an original gravity of 1036° -1040° from a recipe which has evolved over many years. It is a full, well-hopped bitter with a reputation that exceeds the borders of its native and adjoining counties.

[on handpump at the Jolly Angler, Reading] Pours a deep amber brown with a moderate, lasting white head. Was slightly cloudy with a little sediment in the bottom, so I think it may have been getting near the bottom of the barrel, but appeared none the worse for it. Huge floral hops on the foretaste, followed by a deep, woody leaf-rot earthiness. Enormously bitter in the aftertaste. I wouldn’t normally like this much bitterness in a beer as I find it blots out the other flavours, but here the other flavours are strong enough to cope; it’s a superb, well-balanced bitter that I can thoroughly recommend.

Cask at The Butchers Arms, Herne: Brown in colour as you’d epect from a best bitter. Very malty aroma. The flavour is full of malt with a fair ammount of toffee. Probably the best best bitter there is. Gorgeous beer.

The Black Jug, Horsham. Fresh barelly snout. Tea-like amber lined with lace. Simple wholesome woodsiness, heady dried fruit at 4%, buttery biscuit to finish. Much more like it.

Pint cask at The White Hart, Newhaven. Brown color, almost no head. Aroma is spicy and fruity. Flavor is sweet malt, spices and some hops.
