Peregrinari (49), Washington, Washington DC, USA May 15, 2008 Bottle Number 19546 (Thanks Argo0!) Vertical of 12 - 16 - 30 years. Aroma on this beer is nice with notes of molasses, peat, some mild coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and dried fruit. Flavor is quite good with dried dark fruit, mild yeast, molasses alcohol and vanilla. Finish is sweet with mild sourness and stickyness. Flavor lingers a bit long for my taste. Overall, a nice drink but not one I would buy regularly.
See 16 and 20 years for comparisons.
Heathen (508), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Sep 4, 2008 THOUGHTS: This was a little too smokey for my taste at first, but then things started to balance out. It went down easy. Can’t wait to try the other two varieties.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that was black in the glass with slight red highlights and a small, sudsy, tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate to heavy roasted and strong coffee malt, lost of smoke, soy sauce, dark fruit and a little alcohol in the form of whiskey. The initial flavor was moderately sweet, and lightly acidic and bitter; while the finish was lightly sweet and acidic, light to moderately bitter and smokey with an average to long duration. There was caramel and roasted malt, dark fruit, a little coffee and smoke. The medium to full body was oily with soft carbonation and a smokey, moderate astringent and light to moderate alcoholic finish. tronraner (1410), (Louis-, Sevier-, Knox-)ville, Tennessee, USA Aug 30, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours amber black with small tan head. The aroma is peat smoke, bitter chocolate, dark fruit, wood, ash. The flavor is sweetish at first, dominated by chocolate and whisky. It then dries out as some drier wood, ash, and smoke tones come to the fore. A fine blackberry fruitiness stays in the background for balance. The finish has a slight alcohol burn to it, as well as a deep ashiness, leaving an aftertaste much like having had a sip of whisky. This is some pretty good stuff. doubleipa (219), Georgia, USA Aug 29, 2008 Appearaance: on einch, frothy, light brown head. Black. Aroma: burnt, peat, charcoal, licorice, cola, and cask wood. Heavy bitter finish and very dry finish. Nothing like I’ve ever had before. Can really taste the charcoal from the cask. Couldn’t drink more than one of these. Would go great with a Maduro wrapped cigar. Maverick34 (454), New York, USA Aug 28, 2008 Poured dark w/ moderate light tannish head. Aroma is smoky peaty scotch type w/chocolate and malts. Taste is got a bit too much whiskey hangover but some nice choc and a nice tangy note too. desdemoor (10), London, Greater London, England Aug 25, 2008 Review bottle from brewery, 33cl, bottle 01317, botteld September 2007. Black, creamy brown head, woody whisky cask aroma with hint of olive and dark malt notes, thick chocolate malt palate, soft and luscious with woody background and lightly vinous notes, toffee and woody dryness, whiskyish swallow, warming finish with more chocolate, chewy malt, hops, tangy notes and a final charred wood flourish. Excellent.
