SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Mar 29, 2009 appearance of dark charcoal with a medium head ring .. . chocolate and molasses with a light smokey chocolate air .. . like a heavenly beery chocolate milkshake, without the ice cream .. . strange yet refined booziness with a side of deliciousness .. . a nice brew, and i don’t shower, so that’s what that is.... "the" sayravai (3720), Helsinki, Finland Mar 29, 2009 (Bottled) Very dark brown with a medium, beige and firm, slighty lacy head. Aroma of peaty, roasted maltiness, some oak and potato-like starchiness, dried fruit (especially when warm), and licorice hints. Strongly roasty, even charcoal-like at first, but licorice, slight smokiness, oak and peaty malt come and quickly smooth out the initial roughness. Red-wineous, tannic finish with a long, dry, bitter and peaty whisky aftertaste. Medium, slicky body with slightly foamy carbonation. Very intense in flavor - and despite the burnedness, the package remains pleasant and balanced. I wasn’t too thrilled after sampling the 12 yo, but now I can’t wait to get a sip of the 30... pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Mar 28, 2009 Thanks for sharing Yaniv! Dark brown with a thin tan head. Sweeter barrel infused nose. Light bandaid perhaps? I thought this would be peatless, but guess not. Molasses and some very winey lightly woody notes. Lower carbonation and perhaps a bit thinner for the style. Sweet balanced flavor. Some roast, a little astringent. Light oak Light bandaid. Lingering roast. This is a very nice little sipper. thebeertourist (2750), Oslo, Norway Mar 27, 2009 Bottle. Almost black with a creamy light brown head. Roasted chocolate aroma that ends up very peaty with good hints of vanilla. Tasting peaty vanilla, some mild chocolate, medicinal character. Noticeable alcohol. Soft, full-bodied. Highland Park is still very present- wonderful! Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA Mar 20, 2009 Bottle. Peaty peaty peaty with strong chocolate notes underneath. Definite smoke presence in the middle there. Some molasses and caramel as it warms and as I finish vanilla lingers. A treat. MatSciGuy (627), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Mar 10, 2009 [Bottle] Pours a deep black with a smallish tan head. Aroma is some boozy scotch, vanilla, oak, and roasted malts. Flavor matches well, with a really nice rich mouthfeel. Plenty of vanilla from the oak and bourbon, a touch of coconut, and a roasty finish. slimchill (773), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 8, 2009 Bottle. Nose is tootsie rolls, caramel and chocolate. Brown, clear where the color lets up, with a hazy brown head. Flavor opens sweet with a chewy texture, caramel and chocolate dominate. Smoke and oak are in the background. Dries out in the finish making for a highly drinkable and well-balanced beer. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 7, 2009 In short: An unclassifiable moderately roasted black beer with a semi-complex flavour spectrum
How: Bottle 11.2oz. Drank about 1 year after the beer release. Side by side comparison of the Old Dubh 12, 16 and 30
The look: Black body topped by a very small tan head
In long: Nose has the similar elements of its little 12 year old sisters with peat, dirty wood, earth and date except everything is x 2. Also a little smoky note that isn’t there in the little sister. Soft carbonation. Taste of charcoal, burnt fresh wet wood, baker’s chocolate, a whole lot of peat and also a lot of freshly cut green grass, some black liquorice and tobacco leaves. Different but very cohesive. Coming back from a pub-crawl I thought it would be an interesting experience to open the 12, 16 and 30 all at the same while watching a movie. But drinking these three strong beers after an evening of pub crawling let me tell you that I was finding my movie really funny and was laughing hysterically. The problem is I was watching Saving Private Ryan.
