TOSG55 (75), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA Dec 20, 2008 Bottle. Pours very thick, black with little head. The aroma is of malts and bourbon. The flavor is interesting: it has a very strong peat characteristic, and tastes smoked and almost salty, but with sweet coffee malts reminiscent of a porter. It gets much better as you drink it, but it is still rather tough to drink. Very interesting, but I do not think that I would be inclined to get it again. Praetorian (86), Los Angeles, California, USA Dec 17, 2008 Black in color with a small light brown head. The aroma is of woody with notes of scotch, chocolate, dark fruits and a hint of soy sauce. The flavor is of good whiskey, oak, dark fruits and coffee. The texture is watery. Overall Id say it’s a good ale; I like it, but I felt the texture is somewhat of a let down. CaryTheDude (1113), Longmont, Colorado, USA Dec 17, 2008 Crushed with Jakebra. Nice. Black and thick. Just like Honkeybra likes em. Whisky-y nose, with some soy sauce possibly. Flavor is complex. Bitterness, some motor oil, some black stuff. Very nice mouthfeel. Just rolls over the tongue and happiness ensues. m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Dec 15, 2008 Pours with a very dark black hue - almost looks like tar. The hue sits below a light brown head.
Dark fruits are dominant in the aroma, as well as scotch and lots of yeast.
Flavor is woody and smoky, with lots of figs and dates in the end flavor.
Syrupy texture, with lively carbonation. BMan1113VR (2755), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Dec 15, 2008 Bottle. Bottle number 07058 from the September 2007 brewing. Pours with a large, brown head that fades to a ring and a very dark brown body. Aroma of dark fruits, yeast, tar, wood, chocolate, soy sauce, figs and dates. Pours a pitch black with a thin body and weak head. Aroma is plastic chocolate with thin smoke and 80s hairspray, probably Aqua Net. Flavor is peat smoke, roasted chocolate, and oak chip bbq wood. Average mouthfeel. Inconsistent and shallow. blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA Dec 12, 2008 bottle, couldnt read number, very black color with faint chocolate head, aroma of peat, oak and pecan wood and some spicy chocolate, flavor is wonderful mix of chocolate, roasted chestnuts, ground coffee, light whiskey and smokey finish mattmc1973 (300), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Dec 6, 2008 Here is my description of the Ola Dubh 12, I find this does not differ much...
12 oz bottle, pours black with a ruby tinge around the edges. Head is thin, frothy, and tan and dissipates fully, leaving no lacing. Wonderful aroma of smoke, wood, bitter chocolate, whiskey, and dark fruits. Aroma is better than taste, however. Taste of smokey wood, roasted malt, bitter dark chocolate. Thin and oily mouthfeel.
