Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle@Home. Chocolate and Highland Park light peated whisky aroma. Opaque, light brown firm head, good lace. Sweet, chocolate, malty, subtle peated whisky, light bitter, roasted. Soft and full. Flavourful, excellent balanced.

Bottle. Pours black with an average, fizzy light brown head, somewhat diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, molasses, toffee), light hop (perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of prune, dates, wood, and vanilla. Full bodied, creamy and alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and an astringent finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Bottled. Aroma has roasted coffee malts, whisky (moderate smoked and woody). Quite a nice balance. Pitch black coloured with a thin, beige head. The taste is sweet, slightly bitter, has whisky, chocolate, some vanilla, roast. Well bodied. Nicely balanced. Enjoyable brew.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Black colour, light beige head. Aroma of strong sweet whisky, pralinés, caramel, roasted malts, chocolate. Flavour is chocolate, vanilla, whisky, light roasted bitterness, liquorice root and whisky in the finish. Medium to fullbodied, soft and creamy mouthfeel. Good.

11.2oz bottled Sept 2007. Clear deep brown pour--black in the glass--with a one finger tan head, pretty good retention. Smoky, lightly salty whisky up front with some oak behind. There is also a pretty good deal of chocolate and molasses, light roast, plums and vanilla. Flavor follows suit pretty smoothly until the finish, when it gets a little burnt. Bitterness peaked @ a 2-3, and only light alcohol was noted. The whisky never overpowered, which was nice. Medium-full smooth creamy body with light carbonation. Good beer.

Bottle bonused by Cletus. Thanks, John. Pours black. Thick, but not as much as described on the bottle. Small tan head. Looks thin but attractive. Smells even more so. Lots of Scotch whisky on the nose: peat, earth, a hint of smoke. Also, some wood, vanilla, and mild chocolate. Taste adds a bit of saltiness to the overall picture. I’ve been in a Scotch mood, so maybe I’m biased at the moment, but this tastes damn fine.

Bottle dated Sept 2007. Black pour with a creamy milk chocolate brown head. Whiskey dominates the aroma, but there are also notes of vanilla and faint chocolate. Whiskey flavor is not as overwhelming as I expected. I also taste oak, with a bit of vanilla, chocolate, malt, smoke, and a slightly bitter finish. Overall nicely balanced. Mouth feel is medium with a slightly oily edge. Not bad overall, but I like the GI BCS a bit more though.
