Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

My favorite, marginally anyways, of the ola dubh series. Quite smooth with a nice alcohol bite to cap. Black pour with light smoke notes tagged along with the whiskey alcohol aromas throughout. A bit dry and tasty.

[2062-20090402] 11.2floz bottle. Sweeter vanilla hints than the Reserve 12, aroma is lots of heavy roasted malt. Black body with a long-lasting creamy tan head. Heavy figgy fruit flavour with roasted malt and some grains. Full body. More impressive than the 12 but less enjoyable overall with it’s more noticeable alcohol. Still quite tasty.

Bottle. Foamy chocolate head atop a jet black body. Redolent of raisin, oak, cocoa, peat, smoke, slight vanilla, strong oak, and whiskey. Flavor is nougat-caramel much like a milky way, smokey and peaty, chocolate then comes through after which its thoroughly oak and strong scotch which leaves a sort of numbing sensation on your tongue until the next quaff. Palate is soothing and creamy, quite endearing.

Bottle # 14824, Sept 2007. Pitch black pour and a nice chocolate head. Aroma of whiskey (subtle - unlike others I have tried that end up overwhelming), smoke, dark fruit and chocolate. Serious taste on this one - again , like the 12 year, the whisky is very present but subtle at the same time.. perfect blend. Also behind the whiskey was the taste of a chocolate bar and some fruitiness. Like the 12 year, this is one thick beer. This one is also winner.

Bottle@Olympen, Oslo. Big, mostly lasting tan head. Color is dark brown to near black with ruby highlights. Roasted, light peaty dark malts to the nose. Whiffs of wood and rum&raisin. Well-roasted, woody dark malts in the flavor. Also a plummy fruitiness and some cocoa and coffe notes. Well-bodied. Slick mouthfeel. Complex finish; ashy malts, mild lingering bitterness and dark fruits. Good stuff.

33cl bottle at Olympen. It poured a pitch black colour with a small to non-existant brown head that settled down fast in the glass. The aroma is sour with heavy notes of whisky, malts and alcohol. The flavour is bitter, smokey and a bit metallic. Notes of coal, malts and liquorice. It has a short aftertaste. And intersting beer, but not my style.

Bottle @ YNWA, Kolding.
Pours deep nutty chestnut brown. A nice, creamy, beige head on top. Aroma has smoke, quite a heavy peity edge, chocolate and wood. Nice creamy and dry mouthfeel. Flavour is vinious, there are notes of grapes, chocolate, lots of peity character, roasted malts, oak. Dry and very nice.

Sampled at the Alexi TN distributor’s tasting; thanks Jim Bird! Tasted alongside the 12 and 30 year. All poured a very dark brown with a very small dark tan head. Roasty, and a bit hammier than the 12 year. Also a little sweet on the nose and creamy smooth. Pretty tasty stuff, just too expensive.
