Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

0.33 l bottle from Alko. Sweetish and oaky aroma with licorice an coffee. Roasty and peaty flavor with licorice and coffee. Less oaky and more harmonous that Ola Dubh 12. Still a bit too peaty and oaky.

Sampled immediately following the 12 with Mike and maniac during Cluster Brew Part Deux. Like the first, black, slight head died immediately. Aroma and flavor matched: Coffee, chocolate, some cherry, some booze. But the smoke was far more subdued, instead replaced by a winey note. Less cherry too. Quite nice. Now to track down that 30...

12 ounce bottle (02179 09/07) purchased from the Davis Food Co-Op. Single blind tasting side by side with the Ola Dubh 12 year. Musty, smokey, tobacco, leather aroma with some ethanol presence retronasally. Some scotch like aromas are also present. Pretty aromatic. Moderately transparent mahogany color with a medium tan head and nice legging. Not a ton of lacing. This head is longer lasting than the 12 year version. Very woody, dry, oaky flavor with lots of peat and smoked notes. Has a cameo of sweetness in the middle. Finishes dry with some anise, light bitterness, and light astringency. Some boozy scotch-like notes are present late. Not as good as the 12 year.

A rich dark brown beer with a light beige head. aroma of caramel, peat!!!!, and a touch of alcohol that burns the nostrils. Thick carmel body with subdued whiskey character and more peat. I got a much cleaner peat and smoke character off of this beer than the 12, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

(bottle - 330 ml - 2007 vintage) Rating #1800. Dark brown in color with a small and creamy tan head. Aroma is smooth and rich with good hints of chocolate, oak, and vanilla. Flavor is smooth and sweet with lots of dark fruits, earthy notes, bitter chocolate, vanilla, and oak. Incredibly smooth and complex with a well balanced bitter finish. Alcohol is not apparent at all.

Bottle@Olympen, Oslo. Big, mostly lasting tan head. Color is dark brown to near black with ruby highlights. Roasted, light peaty dark malts to the nose. Whiffs of wood and rum&raisin. Well-roasted, woody dark malts in the flavor. Also a plummy fruitiness and some cocoa and coffe notes. Well-bodied. Slick mouthfeel. Complex finish; ashy malts, mild lingering bitterness and dark fruits. Good stuff.
