Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

looks like a stout it’s so black. Like the 12, there is an aroma of soy sauce, and teriyaki beer jerky, but it’s not as prominent. There is much more oak, and smoke, and some charred wood in the aroma. The aroma in this one is much more complex. The flavor is also more complex. Lots of woody notes, some char, and smoke, and a touch of the beer jerky. The alcohol seems to be more upfront also, i’m getting some alcohol burn that i didnt get in the 12. I think i prefer this one, but not by much.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Black colour, light beige head. Aroma of strong sweet whisky, pralinés, caramel, roasted malts, chocolate. Flavour is chocolate, vanilla, whisky, light roasted bitterness, liquorice root and whisky in the finish. Medium to fullbodied, soft and creamy mouthfeel. Good.

11.2 oz bottle. #5759. Huge barrel presence. More whisky aroma and flavor than just about any other BA’d beer I’ve tasted. Peat, wet, charred oak and creamy chocolate on the nose. Near black pour with a thin khaki head. Heavy whisky barrel on the palate. More peat and charred oak. Interesting experiment. Silky and creamy on the tongue with low carbonation. For those who don’t like whisky in beer stay far, far away. But for those who do, it’s worth seeking out if only for the experience.

Murky chocolate brown with a mahogany glow. Meaty aroma with hints of hazelnuts, oak, and whiskey. Winks of tropical fruit tend to simmer in this thick red meat and coffee ground maltiness. Thin flavor of beef, smoke, chocolate soda, bitter wood, and soil. Dirty malt profile lacking the silky touch anticipated from the barrel. Bit of alcohol and zesty bright fruit touch. Light sentiment in a restrained mouthfeel. Soft whiskey and smoky wood finish; plenty of rustic malt and dank earthiness. Straddling the gap between subtle and forgettable, comfortably. Thanks Ben!

Bottle. Peaty peaty peaty with strong chocolate notes underneath. Definite smoke presence in the middle there. Some molasses and caramel as it warms and as I finish vanilla lingers. A treat.

Dark cola brown with a creamy off white head. Flavor and nose are both smokey and soy, with a more earthy flavor in addition the influences inthe nose. I typically don’t like soy influence, but the subtlety work in this one. Quite smooth and creamy in the mouthfeel also.

Bottle courtesy of BeerandBlues2 at a blind Imperial Stout tasting at his house on 9/22/09. This was bottle #13104 / Sept. 2007. Color is black with average carbonation and a fizzy tan head. Aroma of molasses and raisins. Starting with a lighter full body it goes down with an almost creamy mouth feel. Finish has a big dark molasses punch with some prune and raisin showing through then a wine like taste and a touch of bitterness. In the after taste it comes off with a dry feel even though it is sweet. This is a big complex brew that may have to much going on.
