Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Pours black, not very thick looking, with a thin, creamy, light brown head. Smells woody, peaty, and malty with a hint of alcohol. Tastes very woody and earthy with some alcohol, and lots of toasty malt flavor as well. Just a hint of sweetness toward the finish. Medium body at most, too thin, subdued carbonation.

Crushed with Jakebra. Nice. Black and thick. Just like Honkeybra likes em. Whisky-y nose, with some soy sauce possibly. Flavor is complex. Bitterness, some motor oil, some black stuff. Very nice mouthfeel. Just rolls over the tongue and happiness ensues.

Bottle. Pitch black darkness. Slight alcohol and dark fruits reign supreme in the aroma Slightly smokey and just a little bit of roastiness, very smooth and very good.

Without a doubt, the favorite of the three. Thanks Jonpol for allowing a sample!!! This beer seems to have absorbed the barrel better than its counterparts. Wish I knew why!!! Rich, smoky, cola-colored brew that exhibits quite a bit of complexity. I actually enjoyed this one. Chocolate & coffee still play a major role here...not overpowered.

Bottle at cgarvieuk’s sunday sojourn blind tasting. Quite salty whisky nose, some alcohol evident and some stock cube. Mouth is salty and stock, some chocolatey mocha tones, but still overpowering.

11.2 oz. brown, longneck bottle. Numbered 04135 / Sept. 2007 on front label. Poured out extremely dark brown, with copper highlights around the edges. Aromas are whiskey, oak barrels, burnt sugars, toffee, caramel. Flavors are whiskey, caramel, toffee, roasted malts, some espresso & vinous notes. Thick mouthfeel, rich and chewy. Finished slightly dry & chalky.

Bottle. Pours black with a one finger tan head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing. Aroma of whisky, vanilla, roasted malt and oak. Taste is whisky, vanilla, coffee, and oak. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and warm but smooth alcohol. A very good beer but I like th 30 better.
