Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

11.2oz bottle (Bottle No. 01417, Sept 2007) served in a snifter. Slick, oily black pour with a thin head of creamy tan foam that settled and lingered for the duration of the glass. Slippery lacing. The aroma had chocolate, burnt sugar, oak, fine whisky, and dark fruit. The flavor was a little hotter than I remember the 12 Year Old being. Warming alcohol with some lingering peat are the focus. Chocolate, dried dark fruits, and some vanilla are also there. Mild cardboard. The mouthfeel was medium to full-bodied but seemed to be thinning a bit. Very lightly carbonated. Slightly oily on the tongue. Tasty, but I wish I would have cracked this open sooner. Showing some signs that it is on the decline.

Bottle #15042 Sept. 2007. Pours dark brown/black with brown head. Smokey aroma. Flvaors of burnt malts, smoke, whisky and wood. Alcohol comes through just enough to add to the overall flavor. Full body with minimal carbonation. Well done, definately worth trynig.

Thanks for sharing this bro! Pours a rich brown color with thin light tan head. Aroma is of peat, roasted malt, light vanilla and dark fruit. Taste is roasted malt, dark fruit notes, light charred wood and iodine. Full bodied and chewy, this one did not do it for me.

Bottle. Pours a deep midnight black with a disappearing brown head. Noise is rich oak, dried cherries and cranberries, and whiskey. Flavors are summer sausage at first then the whiskey comes to the front with a malty-ness to it. Really smooth mouth. I dig it, I think I liked the 12 better (that is all I have tried so far).

Bottle 09899 September 2007 pours black with a creamy surface haze foam. The aroma is smoke, wood, malts, dark fruits, and peat. The flavor is smoke, vanilla, and dried plums. The palate is smooth and silky. Overall, good, but glad I got it on sale.

Bottle #6901 poured into a snifter. Completely black with no highlights. Head is about a finger high and leaves a maze of thin lacing. Smoky and sweet aroma. Notes of peat and bourbon which weren’t present in the 12. Flavor is quite smoky and peaty too. The bourbon is stronger here than in the 12 but it still doesn’t overpower anything. Nice oak influence complements the roastiness well. Mouthfeel is on the thin side just like the 12. Carbonation is also a little higher. Finish isn’t very clean, as smoke and peat are more prominent than roasted grain.

Seems to be the weakest of the three. Black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is more whiskey and oak. Flavor is more strong oak, chocolate, booze, molasses. Has a bit of funky sourness. Finishes boozy, kind of a mess.

Got this bottle at Sam’s in Chicago last week. This is way more subtle, mild, and less fruity than the 12 of this seriies. Bigger tan head. No highlights - opaque. Milder nose of the whiskey, malt, chocolate, coffee. Silky body. Smooth. Very rich yet elegant yet robust beer. Less apparent booziness, yet same abv. Yummy.
