Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

side by side with 12, 16, and 30.  12 poured a black with mild flat head, mild strong scotch aroma, full flat smooth palate with scotch mocha finish, sticky aftertaste. 16 had a longer head, milder aroma, smoother balanced and whiskier milkier palate. 30 had same head as 16, smooth scotch aroma, lot smoother palate and more vanilla leading in to a well balanced mild finish, the best was 30,.

Black body. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, and faint bourbon. Slightly lactic sour, and chocolate.

Black color! Solid body. Whisky in aroma and taste. Good, but not worth the $9+ price!

Thanks, bro! Pours a very dark ruby color that almost looks oil-black, with a very thin white ring. Aroma is smoke, wood, roasted malts, tobacco, and a bit of alcohol. Taste is smooth, smoke, tobacco, and a mineral-like quality that my bro explains as Iodine.

Bottle # 04450: Thick, viscous black pour...somewhat ashy in the nose with the whiskey/oak melding together wonderfully, notes of black malt, bitter dark chocolate, plums, raisins and black cherries. Medium bodied mouth feel, nicely carbonated. Mildly sweet dark malts come through initially followed by the whiskey/oak notes with some more of the ashy characteristics coming through on the finish. Dark chocolate flavors are apparent as well once it starts to warm a bit.

Pours an oily, flat-looking black colour with some large bubbles clinging to the edges of the glass. The aroma is very rich and sweet with definitive notes of smoke, chocolate, dried fruits, and caramelized sugar, coffee and oak. The flavour has a very distinctive scotch presence with loads of smokey goodness that are noticeable instantaneously. There are sweet flavours of chocolate, cocoa and some dried fruits, though much less than in the aroma. The palate is a bit watery, with short residence time. The hints of smoke linger the longest.

Pours a dark black color with no head at all. the nose is very strong and has a lot of roasted malt with hints of coffee and chocolate. The flavor is nice and malty with a whiskey like finish and it is somewhat watery. Initially while the beer is still in your mouth it is refreshing and flavorful but after the finish fades rather quick. You can really taste the roasted coffee and chocolate which is pleasing to the palate. Overall it is a good beer and a nice brew to sit down and sip on.

Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing. Pours a deep dark reddish-brown with a small tan head. Smoky malt aroma. The taste is sweet, smoky, and toasty, of malt, wood, smoke, and scotch. Lingering smoky scotch taste. Really tasty.
