Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

My Bottom Line:
Sublime peat smoke rises from the dark chocolate, vanilla and licorice dessert bestowed upon the ecstatic tastebuds in this rich, complex and highly original Old Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam lingers atop the pitch blackness.
-The salty component from the highly peated barrel alters the vanilla and chocolate aspect of the malt sweetness and takes it into sweet soy realms.
-The roastiness also takes the form of charred wood at times.
-There is barely any alcohol showing in this flavor profile.
-The smoky and roasty finish is bitter and enduring, but not too much as to bother the tastebuds.
-The body is corpulent and is easily perceptible due to the relaxed carbonation.

Bottled in September 2007.

Bottle shared with pilsnerpeter. Very dark brown/black beer with a thick, fine-laced tan head. Aroma is very oaky and cocoa-laden. Rich whiskyish/caramel nose, light sweetness and a bit of nice rich oakiness. The aroma is really lovely, soft and oaky. Very rich flavour of cocoa, caramel and a soft slightly smoky scotch flavour. The peaty/smoky character is really apparent retronasally. Despite all of the complexity, the beer is surprisingly drinkable. Chewy and light salty with a bit of soft briny roastiness. Not boozy at all, and just a generally delicious brew.

Bottle shared by wickedpete. Nose of peppered fish and olive, much like the 12 year. Silky whiskey, roast and chocolate, more chocolate and roast than the 12, for sure, but still some of the oily celery/vegetable notes. Has more of a smoke and roast character, but still with the oily texture.

Bottle 02529, Sept. 2007 - Yep. "Gloopy and viscuous" it is, indeed. It pours a thick, dark brown body that for a few moments has a skinny little brown head. The aroma is a blending of whiskey, bittersweet chocolate, dark stone fruit, dates, and wood. Thick, creamy, and hot in the mouth. The flavor has the addition of peat smoke, hard nuts, and an earthy bitterness. The finish is hot, malty, bitter, and sticky. Very nice.

Dark brown with a thin lid of tan bubbles. Darker malts and dark chocolate syrup backed by whisky. Whisky has some notes of dark cherries, oak and hint of iodine. Nice light pale malt sweet start which develops to a rich toasted malt, oak and mild peat middle. Light alcohol in the finish. Some black malt bitterness seems to kick in and out. Fairly light in feel, but there is enough depth in flavor to carry things through. Long woody linger. A balanced and thoughtful brew.

Bottle@Home. Chocolate and Highland Park light peated whisky aroma. Opaque, light brown firm head, good lace. Sweet, chocolate, malty, subtle peated whisky, light bitter, roasted. Soft and full. Flavourful, excellent balanced.

Bottle: Pours a black color, similar to the 12, with a light head. The nose is richer than the 12 with a peaty snap followed by more plum and molasses than honey and citrus. The smokiness reminds me a bit of roasted hojicha or lapsang souchong. Nice chewy body with a carob and vanilla backing towards the tail. Yummy!

Bottle from Dilly Deli. Poured clear dark brown color with full brown head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Heavy aroma of caramel, nuts, and peat toasted malt. Medium to full body with smooth texture. Medium toasted sweet earthy wood flavor with a medium sweet whiskeyfinish of long duration. My expectations were met with a smooth complex brew.
