Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Purchased a single 11.2 oz bottle at Zipps Liquors in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin and fast dissolving light tan head that dissipates clean. Aroma of mostly whiskey with a sharper peat and alcohol compared to the younger 12-year version. Taste is the same as its aroma. More whiskey and peat flavors on a thick, full bodied dark malt beverage with some metallic and charcoal character. Finish is oily with a distinct whiskey aftertaste that really makes a difference. If you enjoy the taste of whiskey more than a dark malt beer, this one is for you.

Bottled. Poured deep brown, but rather clear with a tan head that stuck around for a short while. The aroma picked up sweet whiskey over baker’s chocolate in a very nice presentation.. charred smoke and oaky notes highlighted.. warm and inviting. I didn’t like the malt bill as much in the flavor department with less-defined chocolate and other black malts down there.. whiskey was present from the initial tangy impression on the tip of the tongue through long after the finish.. touch rough, but it kept me interested.. kiss of vanilla sweetness joined the whiskey and semi-sweet chocolate on the finish. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate with some tacky feel on the back.. OK flow, but not as smooth as the 30.

Bottle (330ml). Shared by jerc and mabel with me and garthicus. Oily black pour with an average creamy frothy dark tan head. Rich, dry iodine/peat aroma with light toffee roast maltiness. The taste is quite similar to the 12 year-old - iodine/peat balanced against sweet malt, but in this 16 the scotch is more intense and acidic; detracts a little bit from the enjoyment. Slick, slightly light body, acidic with a bitter/boozy linger - very nice, just a little less balanced than the 12-year-old.

Second in the series. Pours dark with a bit of initial head. Compared to the 12 year: More rich whiskey aroma. More ageing. Less chocolate. More moutheel from what’s going on, but that’s astringency too. A bit of richness, but also more whiskey, more drying. May have liked the 12 better at the same abv.

2009-04-02. Pitch black body with a pleasant smooth creamy brown head that fades (3+). Aroma is mild in the same way as the 12 year version, but seems "smoother" somehow, even though the whisky touches that are interwoven seem slightly stronger, modest roast malt. Flavour has more prominent whisky than the 12, touch dry overall with a sweet malty core. Light bitterness throughout lingers into the aftertaste, spurred on by the alcohol. (7+) Smooth medium bodied palate is a bit under carbonated but it mostly works for the beer. Not bad by any means but the increase whisky and alcohol representation made it less drinkable for me than the 12. I might not have noticed as much if I had not had them back to back. This bottled brew from Indianapolis, IN poured a very small sized head of foam with a frothy top and dark brown colored quickly diminishing bubbles. The body was opaque with a black color and no visible carbonation. The aroma was of very nice dark malts and dark roasted chocolaty malts. The mouth feel was mildly tingly from start to finish with a smooth rich flavor and a soft hop backing. The flavor contained notes of nice chocolate dark malts and a smooth whiskey backing.

(Bottled) Very dark brown with a medium, beige and firm, slighty lacy head. Aroma of peaty, roasted maltiness, some oak and potato-like starchiness, dried fruit (especially when warm), and licorice hints. Strongly roasty, even charcoal-like at first, but licorice, slight smokiness, oak and peaty malt come and quickly smooth out the initial roughness. Red-wineous, tannic finish with a long, dry, bitter and peaty whisky aftertaste. Medium, slicky body with slightly foamy carbonation. Very intense in flavor - and despite the burnedness, the package remains pleasant and balanced. I wasn’t too thrilled after sampling the 12 yo, but now I can’t wait to get a sip of the 30...
