Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Labeled 02014/Sept 2007. Black pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma is very peaty with roasted malts, light vanilla, molasses, burnt wood and smoke. Taste is delicious! Smoke, burnt wood, light vanilla, peat, molasses, treacle and light scotch. Very tasty! Body is light-medium to medium with soft, almost faint carbonation feel on the tongue. Rather smooth overall. Light warmth as well. Ends with a bit less of the smokiness in it, more roasted malts, vanilla, wood and treacle. Can’t wait to try the 30!

Brandon, Fl - Kingdom Liquors - 11.2 oz bottle - #5629 - for these tracking. Pours a dark as night black with a thin mocha colored head. Strong aroma of smoked meats and salting fish - settles into something resembling fruity pebbles. Flavor of smoked meat comes through as well with some strong coffee notes. Earthiness comes through as well - rich black potting soil comes to mind. Just a tad too much saltiness though for my liking. Thick and rich mouthfeel. Nice novelty.

Bottle at Oslo Beer Festival 09. Tar and smoke aroma. Wonderful sweet and sour beer, malty body with long lingering smoke. Warming feeling and echoes of the whisky as it slips down.

12oz from the PP Bottle Shop. Shared wtih my gf cyn and dalekliz. Pours black with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is extremely rich and very malty. Taste is very aggressive, extremely bold and adds a big old kick. Nice beer, with a lot of oomph.

Medium shiny brown head. Opaque black body. Rich milky chocolate aroma with vanilla oak notes and some earth and marzipan, velvety smooth. Sweetish earthy milky chocolate taste with hoppy alcoholic caramel and wood edge. Smooth, rounded, mild mouthfeel, despite the hop bite. Fullish body. Dry earthy roasty smoky aftertaste with cinnamon and plastic notes, quite bitter, but at exactly the right level to balance the beer. Amazing smoothness and richness. A fantastic beer. (0.33l bottle at Olympen, Oslo.)

What an awesome beer. Very often I don’t like whisky flavors in my beer, but rather than cheap bourbon, this has good scotch, and it makes a world of difference. The aroma has lots of peat and whisky. Some smoke, lots of malt, a little sugar. The peat is prominent, and blends very well with the rich malt flavor.

Bottle, thanks Beachbum25!!! Molasses is the first thing I smelled, followed by some spices(cinammon, etc) Scotch aroma is evident. Head is a tad better than the 12, but not much. Wood and smoke tones are readily available on the tongue. Hops are a tiny bit more noitceable than the 12. Very good.
