Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

I really couldn’t tell much of a difference between this one and the 12, but I didn’t drink them side by side. Note to self: see other rating for notes.

Tiny, tan head over a deep rosewood body. Peaty aroma of vanilla with roasted malts. Roasted, sweet malty flavoured with hints of blended whisky and liquorice acidity. Smooth and gentle finish (Taster at European Beer Festival, 12.09.2008).

With Easter dinner dessert chocolates. Mighty tasty. Imagine taking Old Engine Oil and making it better, richer, tastier and chewier. The most interesting new British ale I have tried this year.

(Bottle) Very dark colour, almost black, with ruby hints when seen through light. Creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, cocoa, dark fruit and woody, slightly smoky hints of whisky. Malty, roasted taste with creamy coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, raisins and oaky, smoky hints of whisky. Bittersweet finish with moderate bitterness and a warming puff of alcohol. More than medium body, smooth mouthfeel. Brilliant balance, the whisky character stays in the background but is always evident. Subtle but impressive wood ageing. Lovely beer!

Bottle# 10884 (2007) Courtesy of the sloth. Pours black and gloopy. Nose is pungent and remeniscent of a wet cellar in some old mansion: Caramel malts, wet wood and a touch of whiskey spilled on the floor...and some blackberries? Body is rich, smooth and surprisingly only Medium +. Mouthfeel is on the short side. Head is revived easily by the cat merely headbutting the small table for attention. Lingering whiskey bite at finish where the normal hop finish is expected. Some droopy lacing. Wonder how this will taste with a few years of dust on the bottle.

Bottle @ Toronado. Dark brown with a smallish tan head. Aroma is deeper in sweetness and fruity notes than that of the 12yo. Still plenty of bourbon barrel. Flavor retains a nice smokey to sweet balance with more raisin and toffee. Nice malt balance.

Bottle: Pours dark with not light coming through, and a dense creamy tan head. Nice aroma with some rich cocoa, mild plummy notes, smooth and mild oak, roast and purple grape skin notes. Has a great silky feel in the palate. The fore flavor is fruity with purple grape, plummy notes, sweet-ish tobacco, cocoa roast, earthy peat, mild smokiness and toasted oak. Remains drinkable in it’s tasty richness. Well done and nicely integrated character.

[2062-20090402] 11.2floz bottle. Sweeter vanilla hints than the Reserve 12, aroma is lots of heavy roasted malt. Black body with a long-lasting creamy tan head. Heavy figgy fruit flavour with roasted malt and some grains. Full body. More impressive than the 12 but less enjoyable overall with it’s more noticeable alcohol. Still quite tasty.
