Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

bottle 9/07. pours a dark black sticking with it’s name. little tan head - which leaves nothing behind. nice aroma filled with molasses, dark fruits and a touch of alcohol. very thin body and kind of one dimensional, although that one dimension is quite enjoyable. some sweetness, a bit of vanilla and the whisky comes through on the finish. I was hoping for a bit more body out of this one.... but overall a very enjoyable ale. Not worth the price tag though.

The pours is very dark near black color, with a very thin tan head. Nose is smokey wood, vinous, and alcohol. Taste resembles the nose and is smooth with a nice alcohol warming at the finish. This ale is very finicky to temperature, make sure not to try it to cold!

Bottle 08997, from sept 2007. Black pour with a tan head. Aroma is expensive scotch: vanilla, smoke, peat. Flavor is subtly scotchy, with some chocolate and slight bitterness. Lots of smoke and oak. Really nice and warming, loved it.

Pours almost black with a medium tan head. Looks like an Imperial Stout. Aroma of molasses, toffee, and smoke. Taste is full of sweet malts, smoke, and wood with a clean whiskey finish. The finish has some bitterness as well. The whiskey is well integrated throughout. Very nice beer.

Bottle, thanks Beachbum25!!! Molasses is the first thing I smelled, followed by some spices(cinammon, etc) Scotch aroma is evident. Head is a tad better than the 12, but not much. Wood and smoke tones are readily available on the tongue. Hops are a tiny bit more noitceable than the 12. Very good.

No 15498, Sept 07. Strongly smokey, salty, peaty and roasty... very dry on the finish... leaves you smacking your lips and thirsty... smooth, but just a scotch flavor bomb, not my cup of tea.

Pours a dark brown body with a thin ring of tan head. Awesome flavors of smoke and bacon. Little dry on the finish.
