Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

330ml bottle. Mildy sweet, fudgy chocolate aroma, very lightly smoky, earthy and peaty, with faint tobacco and raisin. Solid ebony color with a hint of brown showing around the edges, and a very fine, slight head. Flavor is predominantly roasty and sweet to start, dark chocolate character in abundance, turning lightly bitter and showing hints of old wood before finishing with lingering, darkly sugary, nutty tones of whisky and toffee. Mouthfeel is very gently acidic and smooth, lightly coating and ultimately drying, with a full, almost syrupy body. Some late warmth. Really rather subtle, particularly for it being a barrel-aged beer of its heft.

Bottle 08411/Sept. 2007. Aromas of dark fruit and smokey wood. Opaque brown/black color with no head. Medium body with very mild carbonation. Flavor is sweet burnt malt with dark fruit and wood; a bit phenolic. Not to mention smoke. Agree that Lapsang Souchong is similar. Finishes dark, malty and smoky. Mouthsmacking.

Bottle (number 08427). Black beer with ruby highlights. Slight brown head. Light peat, vanilla, oak, caramel aroma. Peat, caramel, light oak flavor. Medium body. Lingering peat, caramel, light roast, vanilla. Lighhter barrel components and more drinkable than the 12. Nice balance.

Pours an oily opaque with a thinly-lacing dark tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark caramel malt and some earthy smoky peat. Body starts with a mild sweetness and some light fruity esters with a decent balance of woody scotch before a drier, slightly oxidized and warming finish. Not quite as peaty as the 12 year old version, but still pretty good.

(33cl bottle, #04291, Sept07, vertical with the 12 & 30) Black body with small, quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is medium sweet, vanilla, some caramel, molasses, roast, whisky/peat, faint mint. Taste is moderately sweet, roast, caramel, smoke, plum, molasses. Medium-full body, some stickiness, notably smoother than the 12. Scotch is complementary rather than overpowering.

Chris_o’s GBBF Shindig 08. Rich & heady. Very smooth and malty with a nip of bitterness. Tastes like Old Engine Oil. Aroma has some awareness of whiskey, but essentially this reminds me of Old Engine Oil.

Intensive aroma of wood barrels, hints of coffee and bitter chocolate. Black color, foamy brownish head. Flavor is malty and sweet, sherry notes, wood barrels and hints of alcohol and coffee. Dry, quite bitter end. Lovely brew.
