Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Gorgeous, succulent, aroma of rich malt, hints of high quality coffee bean, and finally, whiskey, not at all strong, but a definite presence, charming as can be, smooth as silk, Rich ,smokey malt flavor, caramel frosting, ,and textures of light but flavorful, quality scotch Whiskey, so much more subtle then American versions, what an enchanting brew to sip on a cold winters night

Pours an easy to see through black with a small tan head. Aroma of wood, dark chocolate, honey, toffee, raspberry, light coffee, and just a bit of sweetish smoke. Tastes right on with dark chocolate, toffee, honey, wood, acidic coffee, vanilla, herb/spice or something; definitely a lot of whiskey notes, but no heat. Finishes with a gentle toast, coffee bean, earth, char-like smoke, and wood. Dry on the throat. Medium bodied, almost heavy, average carbonation, slick coating mouthfeel. This is great. Whiskey notes with NO heat, not too heavy, big flavors and subtle flavors together as one, there’s just nothing to dislike here. Awesome.

33 cl, number 10053, bottled Sept 07. Small head that lasts leaving a soapy film of frosting on the glass. Aroma is hickory wood, oak, whiskey, caramel, chocolate, soy sauce, coffee, raisin, peat, vanilla, beef jerky. Flavors are similar, and then some. More mint and smoke on the finish. Medium-heavy body is dry and smooth with light carbonation. Although this one is fantastic, I like the others in the series better; they seemed to be a little sweeter.

My boyfriend gave me this beer, tee-hee. It appears to be named after our president Dubha. I’d re-elect it. Fuck U Osama.

Excellent beer. Its a combination of two of my very best delights an excellent beer and an excellent whisky. Old engine oil and Highland park. Super rich in aroma and flavor. Strong, warming and full.

Room temp. bottle (#13441, 9/07 bottling) pured into English pint. Pours oily black with a deep tan 3-finger head. Aroma of malt with a light smoky undertone. Slightly oily palate. Malyy flavor with a noticible smokiness and a not of chocolate. SLightly astringent on the tongue at first, but that goes away over time. Excellent.

Aroma of oak, cherries, vanilla. Pours black with a thin brown head. Flavors of baking cocoa, smoke, oak, vanilla, cherry, dark chocolate. Delicious! Dry finish and aftertaste of baking cocoa.

Cute bottle, 11.2 oz. Pours dark brown color, nice head. Yes, this is worth the 10 for aroma, it has all the wonderful qualities of a good scotch without burning off your nosehairs when you smell it. Peaty, smoky... underneath some dark fruits (raisins, etc.) and milk chocolate. The scotch definitely comes through in the flavor too... salty, smoky almost a meaty character. Really good, complex, interesting. This is good, I can’t wait to try the others.
