Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

12 oz bottle - Opaque black color with small medium tan head. Aroma is full of molasses, dark caramel, ash, raisens, subtle smoke. Flavor is full of roasted caramel, bitter malts, dates, oak, faint roastyness. Finish is fairly bitter for the style. Overall it’s good, but doesn’t quite live up to the hype or the price. I don’t get much scotch out of it.

Bottle: Pours a black color, similar to the 12, with a light head. The nose is richer than the 12 with a peaty snap followed by more plum and molasses than honey and citrus. The smokiness reminds me a bit of roasted hojicha or lapsang souchong. Nice chewy body with a carob and vanilla backing towards the tail. Yummy!

Forgot the bottle number...7xxx. Like the previous rater clearly states....there ain’t much difference between this one and the 12 yr version. If nothing else it seemed less boozey....still a distinct woody whiskey character just not as forceful. Upon pouring the tan head was fuller and stayed around for a bit longer also. Definitely smooth.....and like the 12 yr it has a nice alcohol warmth from start to finish. Very tasty indeed.

Bottle. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty oaky chocoalte aroma. Slightly sweetish roasted malty oaky licorice and chocolate flavor. Hasa roasted malty licorice and a dry oaky finish.

Bottle. Peaty peaty peaty with strong chocolate notes underneath. Definite smoke presence in the middle there. Some molasses and caramel as it warms and as I finish vanilla lingers. A treat.

Shockingly, not as good as its younger cousin, the 12 year old version. Same black pour with a ring of tan bubbles. Harsher aroma with more peat and alcohol. Taste was similar, with a good blend of malt, chocolate, and oak. There was more whiskey taste which gave it a salty bite. I enjoyed the scotch flavors with this beer, but liked it more in the more subtle 12 year old version. An excellent beer, nontheless

Bottle@Olympen, Oslo. Big, mostly lasting tan head. Color is dark brown to near black with ruby highlights. Roasted, light peaty dark malts to the nose. Whiffs of wood and rum&raisin. Well-roasted, woody dark malts in the flavor. Also a plummy fruitiness and some cocoa and coffe notes. Well-bodied. Slick mouthfeel. Complex finish; ashy malts, mild lingering bitterness and dark fruits. Good stuff.

330. Thanks, HogFodder! Black. Dense, shallow, creamy tan head. Big fruity, slightly sour nose. Coffee, port, salty, too. Oily medium body. Coffee, raisins, wood on the mid-palate. Long woody finish.
