Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

11.2 oz. bottle served in a brandy snifter. Poured a deep brown/black with a finger of tan head. Chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of peat smoke in the aroma. Also some fruity aromas. Medium bodied, a little thin for me. The whiskey flavor is more in the beginning. There’s also plenty of chocolate and roasted malt. A little sweetness in the middle, but a very dry malt finish with cocoa. I was a little disappointed in this. I expected more scotch character, and the body seemed a little thin. There’s nothing wrong with it, but at $7 a bottle, I want a happy ending!

Black/brown pour with no head to speak of. Smells malty, charcoal, earthy, more alcohol than the 12. Tastes malty, little roast, maple, raisin some dark red fuits. Middle to finish is dominated by the oaky charcoal, which makes this version too smokey to me compared to the 12, which I liked better. Still not bad, but definetely not worth the price tag. After having the 12 I was worried about there being too much barrel prescence in the older ones and I feel I was correct. Other than to say you’ve tried it, save a few bucks and get the 12.

Appearance: Pours dark brown, appears black in glass. Head is a tannish brown Smell: Heavy notes of chocolate, malt, burnt sugar and alcohol. Flavor: Has a funky almost smoked flavor for a finnish, must be the barrel its aged in. Has a slightly woody/ scotch like after taste as well. Definitely different Palate: Smooth yet funky Not the biggest fan but not bad Serving type: bottle

Crushed with Jakebra. Nice. Black and thick. Just like Honkeybra likes em. Whisky-y nose, with some soy sauce possibly. Flavor is complex. Bitterness, some motor oil, some black stuff. Very nice mouthfeel. Just rolls over the tongue and happiness ensues.

Name: Ola Dubh 16
Date: 03/28/2008
Mode: Bottle

Appearance: black, short lived creamy tan head, bits of drippy lace,
Aroma: aroma of of dark chocolate candies filled with whiskey, touch of vanilla builds the sweetness, hint of roasted balances it back out,
Body: ceamy body,
Flavor: creamy dark chocolate flavor, touch of whiskey and vanilla for sweetness, roasted for balance, the chocolate and whiskey continues to grow and take over until it almost becomes a whiskey candy but held back by the drying character of the roasted malt, light bitter finish drifts out of the roasted and dark chocolate, touch of alcohol,
Overall: a bit richer than the 12 with more of the whiskey sweetness,
