Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Labeled 02014/Sept 2007. Black pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma is very peaty with roasted malts, light vanilla, molasses, burnt wood and smoke. Taste is delicious! Smoke, burnt wood, light vanilla, peat, molasses, treacle and light scotch. Very tasty! Body is light-medium to medium with soft, almost faint carbonation feel on the tongue. Rather smooth overall. Light warmth as well. Ends with a bit less of the smokiness in it, more roasted malts, vanilla, wood and treacle. Can’t wait to try the 30!

Bottled. Aroma has roasted coffee malts, whisky (moderate smoked and woody). Quite a nice balance. Pitch black coloured with a thin, beige head. The taste is sweet, slightly bitter, has whisky, chocolate, some vanilla, roast. Well bodied. Nicely balanced. Enjoyable brew.

What an awesome beer. Very often I don’t like whisky flavors in my beer, but rather than cheap bourbon, this has good scotch, and it makes a world of difference. The aroma has lots of peat and whisky. Some smoke, lots of malt, a little sugar. The peat is prominent, and blends very well with the rich malt flavor.

Pours a one finger brown head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Totally black color. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Oak nose. Flavor is some burnt coffee but mostly sweet oak. Pricey at $8.99 for a 330ml bottle from Yankee Spirits South Attleboro, Ma.

(bottle - 330 ml - 2007 vintage) Rating #1800. Dark brown in color with a small and creamy tan head. Aroma is smooth and rich with good hints of chocolate, oak, and vanilla. Flavor is smooth and sweet with lots of dark fruits, earthy notes, bitter chocolate, vanilla, and oak. Incredibly smooth and complex with a well balanced bitter finish. Alcohol is not apparent at all.

Probabely the most enjoyable of the 3. Poured the same dark brown/black body with a small tan head. The aroma was dominated by vanilla and oak with some mild choclate notes. The flavor was the same vanilla oak with some creamy coffee and choclate notes, and a very subtle whiskey flavor.
