Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

The best and the most expensive of the trio, all tried in a week. Pours black with small bubbly head. Aroma of whisky, a little bourbon. The taste is rich and complete, how would it be after a few more years?A unique ale with a whiskey character. Above average mouthfeel. Feels more "cooked" or complete than the previous two others.

Dutch tasting session Bunnik. Bottled, at the courtesy of a collegue (Michiel) who brought this from Maryland, USA. Opaque, brown head. Malty nose, peaty, lots of chocolate, fantastic. Smooth flavour, malts and chcolate again. Bitter finish. Mouthfeel not as thick as a thought it would be. Good, but not as exceptional as i thought it would be.

Bottle@DTS. Peay aroma with butterscotch and ash when warming up. Opague, beige head, fair lace. Sweet, peaty, ash, roasted, coffee, some licorice, very smooth. Unbelievable compexity and balance. Great stuff!

Thanks for sharing, iowaherkeye. The body is perfectly black with a thin light khaki head. The aroma has some rich cocoa along with some light coffee notes. There is also some peat and sea water. The taste has some light notes of peat and toffee. There is a nice green tea note. The finish has some iodine and tobacco.

Thanks to Devon for bringing this! Poured deep brown with a loose cap of beige head. The aroma picked up quite lightly smoked caramel and chocolate notes upfront with a touch of wood.. the brew was very well integrated with the barrel. The flavor found dry liquid smoke paired with darker chocolate, toffee, and caramel maltage.. black pepper and scorched black patent malt right behind.. the mellow, smooth Scotch was well-integrated, but I wasn’t enamored with the malt bill. Dry on the palate (almost bracingly so on the back) and medium-bodied with a long finish.. almost a stale feel on the middle. This was a solid offering.

Courtesy of SoLan. Pours an opaque black. Aroma is an elegant melange of wood and peat, smoke and sweet. While not a Scotch fan per se, the aroma of the whisky barrel is beguiling. The flavor is well integrated, with all the components balanced harmoniously, creating a great beer. I liked this better than the 12, though no where near as much as the 16.
