Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle from Solan, thanks! Almost black and opague. oak and peat, but also cream and dark chocolate in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with initial caramel and chocolate, overpowered by peat, oak, single malt whisky notes, cacao and grapes. A marvel of balance in aroma and flavor. Loved it, but this beer is just a bit too thin to be closer to perfection.

bottle. thanks to xnoxhatex! pours black with tan head. nose of scotch, baker’s chocolate. flavor is ashy, chocolate, very subtle scotch but the barrel really dries this out. reminds me of the brewdog beers.

Great smokey flavor mixed with scotch and a earthy tone! Pours black as it gets and a with a small head. $20 for a bottle of this and I would say it is worth another shot. A outstanding brew!

Snifter. Pours nearly black with one finger beige head. Aroma is of coffee, bitter chocolate, roasted malt, and whiskey. Flavor is incredibly well balanced, and powerful. Smokey peat, roasted malt, earth, and scotch are most compelling, with some subtle notes of maltyness. Simply incredible in its uniqueness. Palate is smokey with whiskey evident- otherwise smooth and drinkable- although whiskey flavors poke through, alcohol itself is largely unnoticable and quite well hidden. Simply amazing.

I had the pure delight of trying this on tap today at Brew’s Cafe in Granville. I feel lucky! Poured a dark brownish black with a delightfuly creamy tan head. The aroma was WONDERFUL. Smokey, peaty, and a light hint of whisky. The flavor was sweet and smooth. So very well blended. Hints of vanilla, a bit of coffee, but mostly smoke, peat, and a nice smooth whisky finish. I REALLY enjoyed this beer!

Bottle shared courtesy of KieferUGA. Poured a dark brown with reddish hints; nice color. Aroma was very complex, albeit not great. Meat, smoke, whisky and peat with some light chocolate residue. Carbonation was a bit too low for my liking. I normally don’t mind a soft palate, but this just didn’t work too well. Finish was very abrupt and flat. I think my dislike for the palate, tempered my liking of the flavor. Flavor was generally meaty, roasty, peat and whiskey. Surprisingly, I liked the 12 year old better, but definitely glad I had this.
