Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Cask at Blind Tiger in NYC. Pours dark brown almost black. Aroma is heavy toffee, and scotch. Tastes of rich malt, little bitter fruit taste, huge whiskey taste. Palate is sticky and boozy.

(Bottle) Pours dark brown, black in the glass with a creamy brown head. The aroma is of round whisky, peat, wood, soft tannins, mild vanilla, light dirty oxidation, nuts, dark chocolate, salty soy, earth, wet tobacco, Madeira wine, liquorice, brown sugar and sweet dark fruits like figs, prunes and raisins. Clear notes of dry and dusty roast. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light bitter, light salty and tiny tart acidic. The nice round maltiness blends well with the whisky character. Notes of chocolate, brown sugar/caramel, dark fruits, oxidation, wood, mild smoke, liquorice, toffee, nuts, Madeira wine, roasted vegetables and broth. The mouthfeel is round with a nice umami-like touch. The carbonation is maybe a tad too lively. Lingering aftertaste of mild roast, Madeira wine and dried fruits. Medium (to medium full) bodied. This beer is more flavourful and interesting than super duper.

Black with some brown shining through, small head that leaves pretty nice lazing on the snifter. Aroma is rather heavy peaty whisky with notes of liqourice, smoke and tar. Flavour is intensely peated, salty and oaky with notes of vanilla, liqourice, ashtray and wet wood. Ends on a very peated salty note with alcohol warming the tummy. Mouthfeel is medium and very smooth. Nice heavy whisky character here.

Bottle. Pours an almost black liquid with a rather small, tan head. Aroma is rich, sweet and a bit alcoholic with notes of oak, vanilla and caramel. Taste is round with a lot of oak notes and some sweetness. A hint of rosted malt, and a long, sweet, whisky-like finish. Really good.

0.33 l bottle from Alko. Sweetish, roasty, oaky and whiskeyish aroma with licorice and vanilla. Roasty and oaky flavor with coffee, licorice, vanilla and berries. More harmonous, smoother and less oaky that OD 12 and 16 but I still feel that whisky and oak is too much on the top.
