BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 21, 2008 Bottle # 16156 and enjoyed in my NB worthy glass: Extremely oily appearance with a mostly fading head and long legs. The aroma is very earthy and oxidized with heavy dark fruits and malts up front. The charred wood, liquorice and peat are more noticeable in the 30 y.o. expression but then the tannins and nutty "porter" aspects are more muted.
The flavor profile is the most mellow in this version, it is the one most like a true English Olde Ale minus the noticeable iodine and peat notes upon the finish. Much like the 30 year old Highland Park Scotch, this brew is simply too refined and mellow for it’s own good. Some of the character has gone to to the Angels and not to the Ratebeerian. That said, this is still quite a fine beer and it not for the price then it would be something I would stock a ton of in my cellar.
Indulgence (118), Ajo, Arizona, USA Oct 6, 2008 No 22378, Sept 07. Yes, my favorite of the 3. This one comes off more balanced with the aromas, roast, oak, smoke, peat and chocolate... the 12 and 16 year are smoke, salt and peat bombs compared to this one. Highly enjoyable. uhre (276), Denmark Oct 5, 2008 Black with almost no head. Aroma of wood, dark fruit and smoke. Flavor is of wood, smoke and burned malt with some raisens too. joergen (6529), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 5, 2008 Bottle.
Black coloured with a small beige head.
Roasted aroma of whisky, dried fruits and smoked eel.
Roasted flavour of dried fruits and whisky with notes of smoke.
Roasted finish. Rune (1809), Tromsø, Norway Oct 1, 2008 Black as the Scottish devil, supported by a beige head. Smoked, dark malts to the nose. Milky chocolate hints in a roasted malty flavour, added by soft warming whisky notes. Silky and very, very smooth in the mouth. Full bodied (sampled from bottle at EBF, 12.09.2008). dchmela (772), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 22, 2008 Pours blackish brown and cloudy with a thick tan head. Chocolate malt, oaky vanilla and big whiskey aroma. Smooth chocolate malt vanilla taste, not a much whiskey barrel as the aroma. Nice medium body and a great sipping beer. Very good. Not really sure which of the three I liked best.
