Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Nice beer, I liked this one a lot... good balance of chocolate, anice and bittersweet coffee, pitch black, good texture, very smooth to light creamy. Really good beer and will have again sometime.

It pours black as a moonless night with a fine beige head. The aroma is sweet with lots of chocolate, roasted nuts, coffee, and a little nip of alcohol. In the mouth, it starts mild and lush with dark flavors, licorice, and soft carbonation. Then, the rich palate of roasted elements subside in sweetness and give way to a drier, mild bitterness than dissipates with a slight fruit note at the end.

330ml bottle. It just occured to me that I’ve only ever tried one ’old’ style English ale before this, and it seems a shame that i’ve had it stashed in the fridge for 2 weeks! So I wait for a bit of warmth... Pours a horrifically black body with a small tan collar. Slightly muted nose; woody roasted malts, black coffee, smoke and mollasses, with some vinous fruits playing around in the background. Rich body, low carbonation, smooth oily texture sliding its way down seemingly sticking on to the sides. Big burnt malt flavour on the body, smokey, nutty, woody, roasted coffee with an astrigent bitterness to go with it, all in good balance with the sheer overall density of the beer. Some complex dark fruit esters linger on a drawn out finish. Bloody nice dark beer, certainly not what I was first expecting.

Bottle from ’Beersofeurope.co.uk’: Poured a rich dark brown/black with a small tan head that vanished after a couple of minutes.Aroma is chocolate, coffee and malt. The flavour is full of chocolate and roasted malt, absolutely stunning. Gorgeous viscosity giving it a really creamy mouthfeel. This really is a top beer.

Pours near-black with almost no head. Aroma is tons of chocolate and roasted malty goodness with some coffee and vinous sweetness. Flavor is on the roasty side, but sweet as well. Hop content is minimal but noticable. Roasted malt comes through quite strongly, as does bitter chocolate. Palate is somewhat thick, but nothing in the realm of an imperial stout. Finish is quite dry. A unique and chocoalty offering for sure.

11.2oz bottle served in a snifter. Poured a deep brown/black with a finger of tan fine bubbled head. Not much in the aroma department, some chocolate and a little fruit. Roasted barley and some malty sweetness. Body was a little thin for a beer that calls itself engine oil. There are some hops in there, but most of the bitterness comes from roasted malt. Nice long finish.

DELICIOUS. Had at The Pub in Pembroke Pines. Pours a super dark brown color with a tan head. Malty aromas everywhere with driied dark fruit and chocolate. Once the thick and rich malty beer hits your tongue you smile knowing you are drinking a great beer. Some bitterness balances out this beer. Very nice!

(2008-07-18) Deep dark brown. Clear. Medium-sized tan head that disappeared quite quickly. Malts and chocolate in nose. Full oily palate with some carbonation and alcohol. Malts (roasted), chocolate, liquorice and some bitterness. Bitterness increases in aftertaste. Also, roastedness tastes more clearly in long-lasting aftertaste.
