Smelled a little like black licorice to me. Very unique beer which stands out from the rest. ShawnMalloy (120), Auburn, Massachusetts, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2007 Black pour with a tan ring of bubbles. Roasted malt and nuts, bittersweet chocolate, prunes, and coffee. Not as viscous as advertised. Woody, burnt oats, malt, raisins, barley, weak coffee, and just a little bit of smoke. I expected a stout with the name and look, but got a very good old ale instead. Fukito (604), Buenos Aires, Argentina
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2007 Bottle from Cornelius, Edinburgh, november 07. Dark opaque color with a medium beige head. Deep roasty flavor with some dark caramel/ burnt sugar notes. Ends with a nice raisiny/ bitterwseet nut flavor. Some vinous notes too. Medium to full palate with quite sparkling carbonatation and a coating, bittersweet aftertaste. Raisiny, burnt sugar, rummy aroma. Nice, sweet old ale/ foreign export stout. beerdad (90), Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 21, 2007 This is one of the few black ales i’ve tried. Have to say was impressed. The label states viscous chocolatey roasty. That’s not far off. You can taste the toasted hops, with true chocolate flavor in the background. Dark, rich and enjoyable. Driftwood6 (214), USA

Has the musty, malty flavor of an old ale-- but almost could pass for a stout. I didn’t originally know the style, and couldn’t decide if it was an English stout or some kind of weak schwartzbier. Of course-- an old ale! Worth a try, but I would rather have something a little maltier and less roasted next time. johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 13, 2007 Poured black with a fluffy tan head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Taste was very similar to the smell. Very smooth. Floback (341), Naples, Florida, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 12, 2007 Pours no head and the color of night. Loose, spotted lacing. Nose is chocolate malts. Tastes include wheat, more malt, roasty with slight fruity backdrops. Apple-ish aftertaste. Medium carbonation and medium/full body. Not as robust in flavor as to be expected. I like the Special Reserve much more than this version.
