| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 15, 2009 11.2 ounce bottle from Total Wine in Tustin ($4.79). Pours very dark brown to almost black with a thin layer of tan foam. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, molasses, and raisins/prunes. Flavor of slightly burnt malts, caramel, and medicine. Not much of the promised chocolate, though. Balanced, but not a whole lot going on with the flavor. Rather light mouthfeel with noticeable hops in the finish. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 14, 2009 11.2oz bottle. Pours a black body with a finger-width, very creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is quite nice. A good amount of roasts blend well with some rich malts and smooth chocolates. A light licorice and darker fruits as well as a bit of molasses and woody dryness. Flavor is really nice as well. Lots of sweet roasts up front with soft malts. Smooth, darker chocolates with more of that dry wood from the aroma. Not getting as much licorice or dark fruits, but a little peat and smoke along with a touch of molasses sweetness come in during the finish with plenty more roasts and a woody, dry finish. Just a touch of bitterness and a long lingering aftertaste. Lighter bodied, but very smooth and fits this beer well. Overall, I was impressed with this. Lots of roasts with a great, soft malt balance. A light sweetness keeps this balanced and the body makes it very easy drinking. Very nice beer. wcampbell (582), Central, South Carolina, USA

Lightly dry. Light carbonation. Highly drinkable. Not as strong or full bodied as good old ales. NoiZe (1372), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands
