FishManLA (164), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA May 23, 2008 Jet black with no head, no lacing, and little carbonation. Thick and viscous. "Old Engine Oil" indeed. That’s just what it looks like. Nose of raisins and coffee. Taste of dark chocolate, raisins, plumbs, smoke and burned coffee. Pleasantly bitter coffee-like finish.
PilsnerPeter (1394), Flushing, New York, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottle: Dark, near opaque pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is similar to a British Porter- lots of roast, licorice, raisins, and mild oxidized notes. The body is creamy and silky feeling. Has a very malty flavor. Dark roast, subtle, earthy leather-like notes, dark fruits (raisins), dark bitter chocolate, and a subtle purple grape. The finish offers some residual roast and mocha-like qualities. A fairly solid offering. blutt59 (652), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 28, 2008 bottle, dark brown pour with slight fading chocolate head, nose is cocoa and vanilla extract, flavor is vanilla, chocolate, roasted coffee and woody dry finish fredandboboflo (469), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 28, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of cherry, prune, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, raisin, grape, sweet alcohol, all very rich. Flavor of bitter chocolate, cherry, caramel, nougat, coffee, sweet but never overbearing. A bit on the thin side in the mouth, but hardly a concern to such a delectable, complex brew. LilBeerDoctor (473), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a pretty light tan head that lasts. Aroma of alcohol, chocolate, sweet malt, caramel, molasses, and vanilla. Flavor of burnt caramel and sweet malt, some roasted malt and vanilla. Quite sweet, but with the nice roasted/burnt notes in the background. Smooth palate that gets a little heavy as you drink. A nice sipper. darn1207 (240), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 22, 2008 12oz bottle. black pour with a medium to smallish sized light brown head. aroma of chocolate, roasted malts and cherries. creamy caramel and coffee taste with a burnt bitter chalkiness on the finish. does seem to have an oily texture -- though it could just be power of suggestion with the name.
