Aroma was inviting. Mouthfeel was soft and easy to drink. Malt profile contained a subdued sweetness, but it had some nice hints of fresh bread dough, light toast, cocoa and sugar cookies. Hops were somewhat citrusy (tangerine). Lesser notes of flowers, herbs and tea. Bitterness was on the mild side, but it was fitting and provided decent balance. Overall, this beer didn’t wow me too much. However, it was solid and had a nice earthiness about it. hopdog (5630), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 31, 2006 22oz bottle. Poured a medium and cloudy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of nuts, toasted malts, toffee and some floral hops. Tastes of nuts, toffee, toasted malts, and a little earthy. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jan 8, 2006 Cloudy brown with some ruby hints and a tiny little tan head. Aroma is slightly nutty and earthy. The flavor is kind of off and take a minute for your palate to adjust to. Some toasted malts, just a bit of smokiness, but has a somewhat grainey texture in the mouthfeel and just continues to have a murky quality all the way through. Its not a bad beer, but it nevers get anymore than what it is, very one-sided. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 20, 2005 Very hazy tawny tan with little head. Very malty and lightly floral aroma. Rather astringent in flavor with some smoke and hops. Finishes watery. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 11, 2005 hazy amber color, small off white head that faded quickly leaving nothing behind. The aroma was grainy and some what hoppy with maybe some light citrus in there. The flavor was decent but nothing special.Grainy at first with some dull sweetness coming through then a bit of hops in the end.The cruity side is there but nothing to potent but decent enough to make the brew worth trying again. It’s not a great brew but worth trying again at some other time. jah noth (1023), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 4, 2005 Very cloudy amber in color with a big, fluffy white head. Swet malt aroma, very toasty, with some caramel - similar to a bells 20th anniv. Balanced flavor - the malts are sweet and grainy, some apples and pears, banced by mostly earthy hops. As the beer warms, this beer becomes more watery. Decent, I was hoping for more. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Oct 17, 2005 (22 oz bottle: $3.95 at Belmont Station in Portland, OR) After pouring this beer and taking a quick whiff, I can’t say I’m terribly enthused to taste this beer. It smells dry, toasty and nutty, but also a bit stinky. The flavor is all right though. I don’t recall a dry and very nutty maltiness being this dominant in any other ESB I’ve sampled. It’s minimally sweet, lightly sour, and the toastiness is dark enough to be bordering on mildly roasty. Also part of the malt bill is a moderate graininess. Hops is mild to moderate, with a balancing bitterness, but is more apparent in the finish. Body is medium, with good carbonation levels and a fairly clean palate. Brownish amber and hazy body is topped by an off-white head that rises to just under an inch in height, and then settles to a wide ring. Lacing is minimal. In the end, it’s not a bad beer, but the flavor just isn’t doing it for me. TAR (2097), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 23, 2005 Ruddy apricot. Even smattering of pasty ivory foam. Caramel-doused toasted hay and nuts in the aroma with a touch of fruitiness. Soft, lush carbonation fills the palate. Hard body. Initially grainy-dry and stiff, but vividly malted with a sumptuous foundation of caramel drenched nuts and starchy malt. Hard mineral astringency and earthy yeast compound the ensuing leafy edged dryness, but a sneaky kiss of tropical fruitiness and the unwavering caramel anchor lend the right amount of softness. Twinge of floral hop acidity somewhat lessens the body, but creates a caramel apple effect as it fuses with the malt sweetness. Plush caramel and biscuit expressions echo the chalky dryness as a muted stroke of earthy hops lingers. A very authentic creation. Thanks, Lucy!
